Just heard on the radio that all gas stations will be shut down at 4pm in our county until further notice. They are doing this to slow down the rate people are buying gas. I didn't notice any lines at any gas stations today so I don't see a mad rush here in the county. They said that the are probably shutting them for the whole weekend here. Not very good for those needing ot to get somewhere this weekend for the holiday. Luckily we all have full tanks but I feel badly for those that don't.

Edited to stop the rumor from thriving even more!! LOL!

Which county in Maryland? I live in Maryland. I think there may be some misinformation out there. How could they possible shut down the pumps prior to a Friday evening rush hour?

On who's authority is this being done? I highly doubt that gas stations are doing this on their own accord.

Anne Arundel county. It just went on the bottom of the tv screen here too. I can't believe they would do this!

I have no idea whose great idea it was. I really hope the news is wrong. Wouldn't be the first time! LOL!~If I hear differently I will be sure and post it.

This just seems bizarre. To just shut it off seems ridiculous--doesn't that cause a huge rush on gas before the deadline, and then a huge bottleneck when the pumps turn back on? And will it really save much gas? (It seems like people who really need gas will just burn up gas driving to a neighboring area to fill up, and those who can wait for gas will just fill up after the pumps turn back on, using as much gas as they would have otherwise).
If they are going to be getting this desperate, there is going to have to be a ration system put into place...just suddenly turning the pumps off doesn't solve much.

I don't see anything on any of the TV station web pages. (I don't have access to TV at work.)

This is exactly how rumors start and panic follows. Both pipelines are now open, one is at full capacity and the other will be at 85% by the weekend. How or why would they close tanks when there's now gas coming in. Also, the Governor of Georgia has lifted the gas tax which will reduce gas prices by 15 cents starting at midnight...WHY would he do this if there were a shortage. Besides, I don't think Maryland even gets its gas from the Gulf...

It seems that this is a foolish move, if it's really happening. What about people on the road between various places who have no prior knowledg eof this. I can understand if there is a power outage or something along those lines, but to just determine that, whoops, "we're turning it all off now", is a stupid, stupid mistake.

This is from WBAL:

"Meanwhile, rumors have circulated that all gas stations in the state will close at certain times of the day. The governor's office said that such suggestions are "totally out of the realm of possibility" and are unfounded. It's also important to note that not all gas stations have run out of gas."

People get a grip, gas is now pumping through the lines. But when everyone buys 3 times as much gas, it creates a crisis. Stations that usually sell 3,000 gallons per day ended up selling 4,000 gallons in an hour on Wednesday...THAT's what caused the crisis. If everyone went about things as usual then there would be no problem....but when Jim-Bob starts filling up his 55 gallon drums...guess what happens?

A local station I go to usually sells between 5 and 10 cents lower than anyone, and all summer there have been lines after work and at least once every two weeks (when I'm there) they run out of fuel...doesn't mean a shortage, it just means everyone bought it all up.

What station is so irrepsonsible as to report such unfounded rumors?

Anna Arundel county is on the way to the Bay Bridge which thousands will cross to spend the holiday weekend in Ocean City.

I'm not bashing the OP - I'm bashing the moronic media.

A friend of mine called the governors office after he saw it on the news. The office said it was a rumor. Can't wait to see what the tv station has to say about this! I can't remember what local one it was on. I've been surfing through all the channels today getting the NO info. I did want to add that MD is supplied soley through the Colonial pipeline which is the same one that the other southern states use. That is the pipeline that has been damaged and isn't getting any gas through. So far, even though our gas has hit over $3.50 a gallon here there hasn't been any mad rush to it.

This is not directed to the OP!

I am so sick of all the rumors about gas and gas station. Places ARE out of gas because of these stupid rumors and everyone freaking out. About three people came up to me today at work and said, OMG there is no gas. I told them (and this is true) that on my way to the gym and work this morning I passed no less than 7 gas stations and they were ALL pumping gas. Geez.
