I'd like to ask people about their experiences staying off site and using the shuttles. Two yrs ago I stayed at the Grosvenor and their shuttle was just fine for us. But this year I'm staying farther away at the Safari Sheraton. Please don't suggest renting a car..I hate driving unfamiliar roads..I'd rather change hotels........
Some reassurence please

I origally had planned on staying, for free mind you, at Caribe Royale resorts for a week in Late July and just buying park tickets... But I was hesitent. They shuttle ran like every other hour....till 4pm and then nothing... How sucky was that... So I said F-That and booked a longer trip with free dining (although it cost me $1000 more) it will be well worth it. Alot of places have really strange hours for their shuttles

I was nervous about off-site shuttles as well, and my solution was to stay on-site ;). Unless you're using points or getting an amazing deal off-site, I might suggest looking into rebooking a DVC room (renting points to slash the prices down).

I stayed at a hotel on International Drive in 1998 using their shuttle. It was OK, but not ideal.

My first day there, I had to take a cab to Disney because their last morning shuttle was at 10:30 am.

My last day there, I had to take a cab to Disney AND bring my luggage with me and store it at the Magic Kingdom lockers because I could not have gotten back to my hotel in the middle of the day to get Mears back to the airport.

This particular hotel had 3 shuttles in the morning and 2 shuttles in the evening from each park.

Fortunately they also had separate later evening shuttles from Pleasure Island, so I was able to go there each evening.

Here is a link to a trip report from that trip.

Disney has great bus service. The DTD hotels also has decent shuttles, something like every 20-30 minutes.

Off-site hotels have limited, scheduled bus service. You'd be happier staying on-site, including DTD, or renting a car.

Personally , I would move on-site if you do not want to rent a car. The off-site shuttles have very limited schedules and you may end up using a taxi which gets very costly.

Sheraton Safari's bus schedule was pretty good. We intended to take it on our first day, but I realized I had forgotten my Blackberry and went back up to get and ended up missing the bus. Just as well, as it turned out I had to come back to the hotel later to do some work and I wouldn't have been able to do that as easily if I didn't have the car. (Of course, I wouldn't have known I had to come back if I had just left the darn Blackberry!)

I ended up switching my ressie's to The Royal Plaza Hotel in DTD. The shuttle service just seemed to limited AND they do not provide shuttles for events like MNSSH..I would have had to take a cab going and returning....just not worth the hassle.

Thanks to all who replied.
