Need your suggestions for "dress code"

It is REALLY sad that you have to run a dress code by your legal department-really sad.

This is from my company handbook:

OFFICE ENVIRONMENT

While we observe a business casual dress environment, there may be situations requiring more formal attire. If staff is conducting or attending meetings, seminars, etc. he or she is expected to represent the organization in a professional manner and dress appropriately for conducting such business.

GENERAL GUIDELINES FOR EVERYONE

The_______wishes to provide a work environment that is free of safety hazards, offensive behavior and harassment of any kind. Therefore, the following clothing is NOT ACCEPTABLE: spandex; bare feet; shorts, belly bearing shirts or bottoms; sexually provocative clothing; hats in the office environment; clothing with profanity, nude or semi-nude pictures; sexually suggestive slogans, cartoons, or drawings; the observable lack of undergarments and exposed undergarments.

COMPLIANCE

Supervisors reserve the right to send any person home to change clothes who violates any part of the dress code policy.

Where a staff members’ clothing is questionable, the supervisor has first discretion and will follow the normal chain of command. Any staff member who continues to violate this policy will be subject to disciplinary actions.

I hope you do not pull this kind of stuff at the office b/c it would not be tolerated here...

Seeing as I graduated 12 years ago, this probably happened 14 yrs ago. I wasnt one to push the dress code with shorts that were too short, or tshirt that could be offensive. So this was my was to push and learn about myself. I knew I couldnt get into trouble because I wasnt technically breaking any of the rules.

My work clothing now consists of scrubs and shoes. I stay within the guidelines set by my employer. the nurses I work with were ready to fight the issue about wearing only white scrubs (issue has since been dropped by the powers that be). Have I worn things trying to get a rise out of some people, yeah, not at the hospital, but my last employer. But they were always within the dress code for the department I was working. Sometimes people make too big of a deal about what someone is wearing. What difference does it make if the aide taking care of you has a pair of white scrub top vs one that has balloons over it? Nothing, except the balloon shirt may give the patient something to talk about or be able to be used to break the ice so to speak.

An office setting, yes I agree with having some sort of dress code, but styles change. And sometimes what people think would be offensive to the general public, isnt. I dont care if you are wearing flip-flops or high heals with your dress. Used to be you couldnt have a certain position if you had a tattoo, now lots of higher ups may have them. I hate when people have to cover their peircings, not that I have one, because I do not, but I would notice the piercing less then the bandaid they use to cover it. My husband wears dressy pants and polos every day except for fridays. On those days he can wear jeans as long as he has a polo on.
