DH and I are discussing the possibility of taking our travel trailer to the Wilderness Campgrounds for our next WDW vacation. I need to hear the pros and cons of that. We stayed at POR last year and loved it but we weren't in our room very much. We thought the trailer might be a fun way to vacation at the world. Any comments and/or photos will be appreciated.

I'll move this to the Camping board for you; you'll find plenty of fellow campers there who can answer all of your questions. :)

Boy, you need to read the threads on this Camping board. We all love camping at Fort Wilderness. By the way, the really nutty ones call themselves Fort Fiends. :hippie:

BTW, I'm down in Hoover, AL and have pulled my pop-up a couple times to the Fort and are planning to do so again later this year. I would highly recommend it over staying at a Disney moderate resort if you have the camper and TV. It's very relaxing.

Also, have you checked out the Fort section here on the Dis? Read up a little and then check back with us.

1) I love The Fort - for both camping and working.
2) It is a TRUE campground, not a Disney Resort atmosphere.
3) The guests have the RV/Camper mentality, and that makes it special.
4) You will love it.
. . . friendly
. . . warming
. . . relatively well laid out
. . . nice amenities
5) Plus, *most* of the CM's relate to the guests as campers, and not tourists.

:welcome:
A good place to start would be the FAQ Sticky. There are also threads with Fort pics of the property as well as peoples rigs. The people on here are great and are a wealth of information. Have fun and welcome to the camping boards.

You will be hard pressed to find anyone here that will list any "cons" to Fort Wilderness.

Just no better way to relax and enjoy a Disney vacation IMHO!:goodvibes

The Fort is the best! It's a great way to "do" Disney and also have time to relax. I've stayed at the resort hotels and they are great; but none of them give you the "elbow room" of the Fort. It never feels crowded and there is plenty of room to roam, yet very close and convenient to the parks. I know that even though we are just a family of four, a hotel room can get pretty crowded. For us, camping is a great alternative, especially at Disney! Try it, you'll love it!

I can list one big CON. Once you camp at FW it spoils you for any place else. We made the mistake by making it our first camping trip. We are hooked. It's not like staying in a hotel. It's like coming home every time to your place, but just your place at Disney. It's true people are friendly. It's like a community. People don't bother you, but if you're out say hi or stop and chat. I've talked to my FW neighbors more than I've talked to my "regular" neighbors. Everyone is there for one thing and that is to have a fun and relaxing time at Disney. We're going back in October for our 10th Anniversary and I'm counting down the days.

Pros,,pretty much anything you can think of (cept maybe the bus transpo from time to time).

Cons,,:confused3

and two other major pros,,in your camper you can sleep in your OWN bed,,,
and fishing is a lot easier to get to at the Fort.

What an amazing trip you are about to take! Another great thing about The Fort is that there is so much to do there without even leaving property! There is really no othere Disney property that has so much to do right at your back door! There is the usual swimming (at out newly revamped pool which there are picture of here at the Camping forum), eating, and "walking around to look at stuff" activities. But there is also the horses, Mickey's Backyard BBQ, water activities, campfire singalongs, movies outside every night, lots of cool decorations to see at the camp sites (especially at Christmas time), walking trails, and the list goes on and on!

Its home away from home!

Welcome to The Fort and we hope to see you soon!

Thank you all for the info and for moving me to the "camping at Disney World" thread. I didn't even realize there was a thread devoted strictly to camping. I look forward to reading lots over the next several months.

:welcome: to the Camping Board!

This is a fun, informative place to be - frequented by "Fort Fiends," otters, and many, many discussions that always seem to veer off track and end in beer. :rotfl:

...oh, and lots of good Fort info in the FAQ sticky :thumbsup2
