still trying to find a way to go to Washington DC next month, even with unexpected death of heat pump. i'm considering using priceline, but hesitate to do so, as i have no idea what area to bid on. which areas are best? i need something close a metro stop, as i understand driving around washington DC is a nightmare and parking prices are outrageous. are there any outlying areas where i may get a cheaper room that are close to the metro? TIA!:goodvibes

Hi! There are several great threads on D.C. Just go to the search feature and pull them up. Crystal City/Arlington seems to be a good area. I'm sure others will chime in.

We used priceline for a hotel in Washington D.C. about 7 years ago. I know it has been a while, but we were VERY happy with the hotel we got, the area in which it was located, and the deal we got. I don't remember what neighborhood we used or if they are even the same now, but we stayed at the Grand Hyatt. I would guess it is in the area they call White House - Downtown.

We are pretty ticky about our hotels. We were very satisfied with reasonable price, free parking, and free breakfast, and the convenience of being close to the metro stop with the holiday inn at rossyln key bridge. We were there with kids and felt safe. It worked for us at about $100 / night last spring break.

We got a great deal for a hotel in DC on www.travelzoo.com (reg $340/night for $79 night). I just kept checking everyday for new deals and was lucky to get that one.

we have always taken the green line from Greenbelt MD. there are several hotels in that area. wait until after 930 and get an all day metro pass for around $8.

You might try Hampton Inn Crystal City - easy walk to the Metro. Parking $12 (I think)

thanks for the suggestions, everyone! i need all the help i can get, so keep 'em coming!

We used Priceline for our trip last winter and had great luck. Bid on 3.5 stars or above in Crystal City and paid around $55 a night. We split our stay between the Marriott (which is connected to an underground shopping area and the tunnel to the Metro), and another hotel (I think the Hyatt) which had a shuttle to the Metro. We love Priceline! Check betterbidding.com or biddingfortravel.com to see what rates people have been getting lately.

We stayed at the Holiday Inn Rosslyn Keybridge the last time we went and it was fine (it's in Arlington). The hotel is a bit older but it had an indoor pool and free parking and was about a 5 minute walk to the metro. The room had a refridgerator, since there was no free breakfast, we brought food and saved a ton of money. We asked for a room with a refridgerator, a view of Georgetown and a flat screen TV and were accomodated. You'll see mixed reviews but we paid $89/night for a Friday and Saturday and felt the small issues were worth it. On Sunday, we drove into the city and parked near the Smithsonian at a meter for free.

Have fun!

We stayed at the Embassy Suites in Old Town Alexandria. We enjoyed the hotel and location. It is literally across the street from a metro stop. They also include a made to order hot breakfast, with buffet, which helped offset our cost as we are a family of 5.

i love reading about everyone's experiences and the different areas and hotels where y'all have stayed! thanks so much :) i've been reading on betterbidding.com and biddingfortravel.com, but am still hesitant for some reason. any and all suggestions are welcome!

We've stayed here as well. It is outdated a bit, but clean. The free parking saved us a good bit of money, and you can walk to Georgetown (cross the Key Bridge) which is a plus (the metro doesn't go into Georgetown).
We just went to the Holiday Inn website and got a great deal.
