My neice is getting married in July and they have their house bought. I am looking for creative or unusual gift ideas. Any suggestions.

I know the things I used most were money for house expenses and to put towards a honeymoon, a nice vase (at the time didn't understand it but now I use it constantly), extra nice bath towels, gift cards for eating out (handy when moving!)

It depends on what they are lacking. I bought my brother a very nice weed trimmer.

In general, I just give cash, but if you're looking for something unusual, sometimes the hints are right there on the registry. For example, we registered for some camping gear and people got us some awesome stuff that wasn't on the registry that was probably more useful than the stuff we listed, because they have been campers for years and they had some tried and true favorites.

I've also seen people give the couple their wedding invitation in a nice frame, which I poo-pooed originally, but now that I've been married 15 years, I really wish I had my wedding invitation framed in my home. Couples spend so much time over the font, spacing, wording and paper, and it's nice to look back on.

Xmas decorations. I have been at a wedding shower where a giant box of ornaments was well-received. You would have to know their tastes fairly well though.

I received a grill and a card table and chairs that I found very useful....not sure how uncommon that is though?

I see you are from MN, to go along with the law mower suggestion, how about a snow blower?

What about a nice cordless drill? Weber gas grill? A ladder? A cordless trimmer? A power washer? An air compressor? A battery charger? What about a cord of wood and fireplace tools if they have a wood burning fireplace?

Years ago, I went to the wedding of a co-worker who was a huge MN Vikings fan. Her fiancee was a huge Packers fan. We bought them these gigantic, goofy slippers.. one Vikings, one Packers. She told me everyone laughed hysterically when they opened them, and they wore them for the rest of the gift opening.

Fire extinguisher and smoke alarms

Fire-proof box for important papers, shredder, good office supplies (stapler, scissors, markers, tape dispenser)

A bucket or watering can full of gardening tools, rain meter, outdoor thermometer

One of the gifts we did not register for, but loved, was a waffle iron. I never would have thought of asking for one, but we use it quite a bit.

A really decent, heavy-duty outdoor trash barrel, the kind with big wheels so it's easy to roll and the trash guys can't destroy them, with a good locking lid so the raccoons can't pry it open. (Can you tell what's going on at our house? We have found one we like but it's $85!!- for a trash can!!!)

My best friend bought us a cutting board with our last name in an insignia that said "established" and the date. We love it!

We got a brass door knocker with our last name engraved. It is the first thing hung at each home!

If they celebrate Christmas, how about a nativity? It's the one thing we never bought for ourselves. Fontanini makes a wedding gift set, and then you can add to it for Christmas gifts -- there's lots of other figures.

A stocked (with supplies) picnic basket. With wine if they'll enjoy it.

This, too! We received one for our wedding and still use it nearly 25 years later.

I am going to second the framed wedding invitation. I have an artist friend that embellished ours and had it framed. It still hangs in our house 20 years later.

I have an aunt that gives out a notebook with her favorite recipes nicely typed out. Great idea if you are a good cook.

I love these ideas! Where were they last year when I was looking for a gift for my niece and her husband. They got pots and a check.

I third the framing of the wedding invitation! I have been married for 17 yrs and appreciate the fact that I have one that is on display and is not in a box somewhere in my garage. Thanks uncle Stan!!
Some of the unusual gifts we got but appreciated was a under the sink fire extinguisher, tool chest with some tools and a laundry basket full of household cleaning things!

I forth or fifth the framed invitation. Ours is matted in a frame, and she painted flowers and Ivy trailing from the mat onto the invitation. Even if you can't paint/draw, it would be lovely plain.

Picnic basket - we were given a nice set and my mom had the caterer pack up some of our reception food. We drove to our honeymoon destination, and would stop and have a picnic instead of fast food.

Tools/yard stuff - a big hit. Especially for my crafty husband. A 2 or 3 step step stool, heavy duty garden hose, a creeper (padded rolly thing for working under cars), a tool box with random stuff like a picture hanging kit and assorted tapes (duct, electrical, water...). A screwdriver kit - a tool box with a bottle of vodka, oranges, and a ton of different sized screwdrivers. ;)

Fire extinguisher and a fire proof safe/box.

My in laws have a special cookie recipe that is passed down to each new bride. We gave a cousin the recipe in a basket with all the dry ingredients in separate containers, along with measure cups/spoons, and a monogrammed apron.
