Okay so I have been upset since yesterday at 7:30 pm... As I was pulling out of our church parking lot after my sister's choir practice a car t-boned (is that what it's called? :confused3 ) our van. I was with DH, DD5, DD3... The other car hit our van on the left rear where DD5 was seated. She was not badly injured, however, she does have nasty bruises from hitting the armrest and cupholder. Well, after we were hit my husband and I climbed to the back where they were seated. They were in tears and begging to go home. I felt awful. The other driver called for an ambulance because DD5's cheek was swelling up. It looked like the size of a tomatoe and was turning blue quick. When the ambulance pulled up 3 EMTs rushed out to help. They asked me if I wanted my girls to be checked out and I said yes. A female EMT told my daughter, "Come on, let's go to the ambulance" DD5 began crying hysterically and saying that she did not want to go. So then the lady says, "What's the problem? Why is she crying? Why doesn't she want to go? Is she going to get in or what??" I was so ticked off. Hello?! She's 5 and she's scared! Everything is so chaotic and your asking me whats her problem??? Am I being irrational? I really want to call this woman's supervisor or whatever and report this incident. I really do not think her tone or demeanor was appropriate. She sounded and looked really annoyed that my 5 year old was resisting to get in. It wasn't like DD5 was kicking and screaming not to get in the ambulance. To me, she was doing what any other scared 5 year old would do. Oh and get this, she turns to me while I'm holding DD3 and says, "well, what about her? She doesn't looked injured... I guess only one of them had a seatbelt on..." UGHHHH! :furious: I calmly told her that they both were in their booster seats and that they both had their seatbelts on and before I could even finish my sentence she walked away! I didn't want to start anything because I just wanted my girls to be checked out so that we could get out of there. I did, however, request that another EMT check on them.

If I were you I would call and speak to her supervisor.

1. Her job is helping people in stressful situations, if she can't handle that she is in the wrong line of work.

2. If her boss doesn't know it may continue. Many times I have heard, 'I didn't know there was a problem, no one has ever told me."

She may have been having a bad day but yours and your daughter's was worse. Your feelings count more in this situation.

I would call her supervisor and complain. There is absolutely no reason for her to have acted that way.

I hope your daughter is feeling better now. How scary for all of you!

It certainly does not seem like the EMT responded in an appropriate manner to me. Usually people who are in those jobs have hearts of gold and care for the emotional as well as the physical injuries! I don't know if you should report the woman. I think that has to be your judgement call. Hopefully she was having a bad day and is normally far more caring.

Hope you can all feel better soon!

I totally agree with this. I would also add that you should take everyone to the Dr just to be sure everything is ok. Sometimes these things take a day or three to show up. Also, don't sign ANYTHING from the insurance company regarding medical treatment/care. Back injuries and whatnot can manifest over time and you want all that to be covered.

My sister got t-boned by an uninsured driver and is STILL dealing with the issues 6 months later--no one wanted to pay for the damage AND her insurance company wouldn't reimburse for a rental car.

I would call on this one. That is unacceptable, period. Also how do you know she took proper care? She could be a crummy worker as well.:confused3

Since DD5 did not want to go into the ambulance another EMT said it was fine for us to go to the ER to get her and DD3 checked out. They took X-rays and everything was fine. I cannot stress the importance of seatbelts!!! If they did not have theirs on who knows what would have happened!!! They were bruised where their seatbelts were but I rather have that then really serious injuries.

I work in an ER and that is not what our paramedics and EMT's do. They are so compassionate to the little ones. And we are talking 3-4 different companies, plus the town services. Even when they have to backboards or strap the kids heads down into the car seats, they always tell jokes, have bubbles in their trucks, blow up gloves I have even seen a 6ft 2 muscular 20 something emt sing disney princess tunes. So you are not wrong to feel it was odd. T-bone means you were hit by the front of a car into your doors.

Call them and complain. Even the cop responding to the accident I was in (both the other driver and I were teens...) was pretty good to us. That is not the attitude that she should be giving, anyone, especially a scared young child.
Also watch carefully with all of you over the next few days. I was t-boned and it wasn't until a few days later that my back started bothering me. I toughed it out which was the WRONG thing to do, and it now acts up every once and awhile just for the heck of it. I never had a problem with it before being t-boned, so I'm positive it was because of that.

I'd report her to her supervisor! that was totally rude! :furious:

Oh okay... I was definitely t-boned. DD would have certainly jumped into that ambulance if the EMT sang Disney songs! Maybe that should be a new requirement. You must learn a miniumum of 3 Disney songs to be a certified EMT. My husband is looking at me crazy right now. He is about to start his Basic EMT class in June. I know he knows more than 3 Disney songs so he better step up when a situation like mine occurs!

Please also file a complaint with your insurance company and with the hospital this emt is affliated with.....that person should not be working at that job. Terri

oh my goodness... Totally agree I would say something at the least... and at the most she may have been looking for a EMT herself to treat a bloody nose ;)

OMG I'm so kidding but seriously... I would have thought about it. :confused3

emt's are generally not associated with a hospital. They are generally associated with a Fire Station, employed by the city/county/township, not a hospital. Or, in some areas, the emt's may be part of an ambulance company.
If the emt is that rude, most likely, the hospital staff in the ER already know how rude she is.

I would by all means contact her supervisor. Her behavior is unacceptable. Her accusing you of not having your children buckled appropriately was out of line. Don't they have teddy bears on board the paramedic trucks for just this purpose?
