need to receive routine Rx shot while at Disney

I originally posted this on the Resort forum but think this forum is a better fit.

My sister has Crohn's and gets a shot every 2 weeks. You guessed it, she is due the shot while we are at Disney. She has the medicine but needs to have someone give her the shot.

We are staying at the Boardwalk Villas.

Any ideas? I am sure she is not the first person who has needed routine treatments while there. What about the first aid stations at the parks?

We are going to call the front desk tomorrow and ask but I thought you well knowledged folks might have some ideas.

Why can't she do it herself or someone in your family do it. My oldest dd needed injections for early puberty and I just gave her the shots. If you do it in the thigh it would be pretty hard to miss going in the muscle because that pretty much is all that is there.

Yep, speak with her doctor about having a couple of you learn to give them. It isn't hard you just have to follow a few rules. I give my own once a week for my arthritis.

I don't live near her and she doesn't want to learn herself. I guess it burns. This is a 'no Dad' trip so it is just her kids and they are too young to learn.

The shot is very expensive and I would hate to mess it up. In fact, the injections were to be a self-injecting type syringe and I guess too many people messed it up so it doesn't ship that way anymore (Humira).

Unfortunately I doubt that the nurses at the first aid stations will be willing to administer the injection.

You might want to see if her doctor can arrange for a visiting nurse to come to the hotel and do it--it's possible that the insurance will cover a portion of it.

I went to their web page to see if it was just a muscle injection and they do still make the self inject pen but after reading those instructions I don't see why anyone would want to use it. So much faster to just use a syringe. You said she said it burns so here is a quote from their website to help her with that when she gets her injections.

Some people find it helps to apply a small ice pack to the injection site for 2-3 minutes before cleansing the skin with alcohol. This may help decrease the sensation of injecting.

She has done that and says it still burns. They don't ship the self inject pen anymore.

I give my MIL a routine weekly injection. We find that it burns less if it's been sitting at room temp (pulled from the fridge) at least an hour. If that is acceptable handling for this medication, she might try that in the future. Making sure the alcohol dries completely is important too. MIL takes tylenol (1000mg) or motrin (800mg) an hour beforehand too, but that's primarily for the aftereffects from the injection, I don't know if it would help your sister or not.

However, I understand how hard it can be to give yourself an injection, particularly one that is painful to administer. One of the reasons MIL doesn't do it herself is that it's hard for her to give herself an injection that she knows is going to make her sick.

I would try CentraCare (Main gate location - (407) 397-7032) or Main Street Physicians (The at least used to do room-calls for on-site resorts (407) 239-1195,(407) 396-1195 ). If Main Street Physicians doesn't do room-calls currently, BWV should be able to tell you who does.

First Aid has a list of clinics, etc. in the area that she might be able to go to and have it done, but I'm sure she'll probably need to have the medication with her or I think there is a pharmacy that will deliver to the resorts that she could use.

I have to give myself blood thinner shots anytime I fly cross country anymore and they burn like heck. Icing beforehand (with real ice, not those stupid shake, instant packs) helps a ton and I always iced after the shot too! Ibuprofen or some other pain killer is a good idea too. I didn't have a choice, I had to learn. I live alone and generally travel to where I'm going alone.

I am a nurse for a health department, we frequently will give shots to people who bring their own meds, you can check with the closest health department, and they will most likely have you bring the med in its packaging with an MD note and they will give it. may be a small charge for this.
