Not sure which forum to post this on so I am starting here.

My sister has Crohn's and gets a shot every 2 weeks. You guessed it, she is due the shot while we are at Disney. She has the medicine but needs to have someone give her the shot.

We are staying at the Boardwalk Villas.

Any ideas? I am sure she is not the first person who has needed routine treatments while there. What about the first aid stations at the parks?

We are going to call the front desk tomorrow and ask but I thought you well knowledged folks might have some ideas.

I found the DisAbilities forum so I have posted it there.

If anyone has any advice, I will still take it!!

Are you looking for somebody to give her the shot, other than family? You could try asking at the First Aid station at MK, they may know. I do wonder though, who usually gives it to her, and that person will not be with you? How about going to the doctor and have them teach you how to do it, its real easy!

There is a health clinic near Downtown Disney. They will pick you up and take you back to your resort for free. You could try that, but it'll be a bit of a wait at the clinic once you're there. My advice is to go as early in the morning as they'll let you.

As a nurse and a chemotherapy patient, I can't think of a case where a subcutaneous or intramuscular shot cannot be given by person taught to do it. Intravenous injections or infusions are of course, a completely different thing. Perhaps due to distance issues or other problems, it will be impossible to teach someone to do this. I wonder if a nurse at a health stop or pharmacy would able to give the shot if your sister has a prescription with her. I would not feel comfortable administering a shot unless I was using a new, unopened vial of medicine. Good luck with this and I hope things turn out well. Susan

When my son got an eye infection while at WDW, we were given information from the nurse's station at MK about a house call service.

We called, made an appointment for a few hours later that day. At the appointed time we went back to our hotel room to wait, and exactly when promised a real MD showed up at our room.

This was many years ago and I'm sorry but I can't remember the name of the service.

It wasn't cheap, but word is going to the offsite medical clinic mentioned above will eat up at least half a day. We were able to knock this out with the house call doc in an hour, and incorporate a nice break back our room that we probably going to take, anyways.

From Pass Porter's Open Mouse, there is a section (pages 61-67) with advice on traveling to Disney World and needing ongoing medical treatment. You might wanto check that out before you go (browse in Borders or Barnes and Noble). One interesting thing - housekeeping will provide a sharps container upon request. They will do this descretely.

It isn't a matter of learning to give it herself. She does not want to do that and I respect that.
The medication costs $750/injection and she if more comfortable having someone more knowledgable do it.

Each vial is a single dose so it is new each time.

No, not to give it herself, but have whoever is going with her (ie family) go to the doctors office and learn how to administer it, its really not hard. But being a nurse already, I would understand if people feel funny about it. But it would save you so much time to just give it yourselves and be on your way. Who is going with her?

I looked at wdwinfo.com, and they list the above as the direct number for the front desk at the Boarwalk Inn. You should call and ask to speak to someone, they must get this same question on a fairly regular basis.

She did call today. They gave her a few phone numbers to call.
$250 for a 'room call' by one service.
Another will take her $ up front but turn it in to her insurance and then reimburse her.

I don't know what she is going to do. The Dr is fighting with insurance right now just to get her dose mailed for this week. Insurance is telling the Dr that they are a week behind in responding to faxes. So, it might be a non-issue....if this week's dose is pushed out a few days due to insurance, then it might not fall during our trip anyway. She usually gets her shot on Tuesday and a nurse friend gives them to her. We get home on a Saturday so it might work out that we don't have to worry about it at Disney.
