I can stay at the Shades of Green in Sept. And buy their dining plan but meals have to be eaten there. Do I have to stay in a Disney Resort to get the Disney Dining? What would be the better thing to do?
If I can't get the Disney Dining maybe I should stay at a Disney Value resort.
Anybody have an opinion?

shades meal plan is only at that hotel
disney dining plan is only available if you stay at a disney hotel with room+tickets+dining plan package.

Shades is on par with a Disney deluxe hotel. For the price of a value. No disney airport bus service though.

The value resorts will make you eligible for the dining plan, with a much smaller room and less amenities. But you can use disney busses from the airport (a money saver!)

I would stay at shades and buy my meals at the parks or anywhere I wanted to eat...the best of all choices for me and my family. But you need to make that choice for you...I know that what works for some (value resorts for example) would make my husband divorce me.

Having stayed at both SOG and a value resort, I would definitely do SOG, and buy your meals separately. SOG is beautiful, and a nice walk to the Poly, where you can catch the monorail.

Even though I will be doing one Character meal a day?
And there are 5 of us. Three adults

I think you are now asking if going to a value and getting the dining plan is a good thought. Since Shades of Green is on par with a Disney deluxe. You said you have five. Your choice for a value will be the All Star Suites as they sleep six. The other value rooms only sleep four. You could look at the moderate Riverside if you have a child that will be able to sleep in a trundle bed.

It doesn't seem like the dining plan would work out well for you. However, you will have to stay at a Disney owned hotel in order to be able to participate in that.

Thanks for the information. I will really have to watch my money for eating but I guess I will stay at SOG.

FWIW, the food at SoG ain't all that. the meal plan at SoG only covers the breakfast buffet( which is okay, plain, but okay) and the nightly Buffets..NOT Evergreens or Mangino's. Evergreen's..well let's just say every night after a day at the parks they got much of our money.. their teriyaki wings and key lime pie were my downfall...

the dinner buffets almost universally get mediocre to bad reviews.

of course I personally don't see the need to have a character meal each day, but as long as you are frugal with your other meal choices, you should be okay. there is a small fridge/cooler in the rooms and you can always pack lunch fixin's or even eat brekkie in the room as well. there is a small Exchange on site.

we always pay OOP for our meals as the Dining plan is waaayyyyy too much food for the two of us( we always share an appetizer and dessert) and I have never starved nor have I felt like we spent too much money.

In fact, many CS meals around the parks are large enough to split.
