I don't know where to look but a friend of mine has a DS turning 2 in Sept. He has been diagnosed with cancer.

The family has a DD4 and a newborn. The wife will not be able to return to work with the treatment schedule, other children, etc.

I know his family is trying to set up a fund of some sort but can anyone please direct me to organizations that may be able to help him financially?

He is getting medical assistence but there are other expenses coming up. I sent him a link for the Angel Food Ministries but there is not one in the area for him.

I would appreciate any guidance.

My friend works with me and makes a decent living. However with his wife not being able to return to work things will be hard. He will not qualify for any welfare type assistence.

The social worker at their hospital should be able to help them with some information. They can apply for SSI benefits throught the social security administration, I believe the forms are online and they will do all of their interviewing over the phone. They look at expenses as well as income and although my DH makes a decent income we still qualified, it's not the same as welfare programs. The American Cancer society may help with mileage to and from the hospital, doctor's appts., and parking costs. To keep family members informed about their children they can get a free website through www.caringbridge.org. Some people set up a bank account (I can't remember who you can do this through) for donations and put a link to it on their caringbridge site. There are also some great books that your friend might find helpful because some doctor's forget that not everyone knows everything they need to about caring for a child with cancer, you may want to see if you can find one for them because the majority of the care will fall onto them. HTH.

My prayers are with your friends' family. My ds was the same age when he was diagnosed and it was really hard, your friend is lucky to have you.

Your friend is blessed to have someone as thoughtful and caring as you. My friends dd had cancer and she had a core group of people who focused on fund raising, publicity etc. I think the publicity really helps, local and regional newspapers, flyers in local merchants stores. You could also contact local groups who might be able to help for example, kiwanis, elks, etc. Some of these organizations will adopt a local family etc. Host fundraisers like pancake breakfast, dinners, auctions etc. Also maybe a local church etc. can help. Best of luck and blessings to the family.

The church I used to belong to had a food bank for people in need. It was a small church, but always willing to help. We just asked people to register (no income limits) and they were allowed a food package once a month.
Our town also has an organization with a food bank, but I don't know what it takes to qualify. So check churches and other help organization!
There also is the SHARE program, where for 17.00 and 2 hours volunteer service, you receive a package of food once a month. (Volunteering includes church work, scout work, PTO, you can even sack the monthly share for 2 hours) People from all walks of life paticipate in this program! The program for this area is called Heartland SHARE, more info here: http://www.heartlandshare.org/index.cfm?NavID=1&SubNavID=0.
The Heartland SHARE August package contained:

Deli Sliced Cooked Ham - 12 OZ
Boneless/skinless Chicken Breast Fillets - 1 LB
Bacon - 1 LB
Chicken Taco / w cheese - 1 LB
Chicken Nuggets - 2 - 8 OZ bags
Carrots - 1 LB. Bag
Celery - 1 Stalk
Lettuce
Onions - 2 LB. Bag
Potatoes - 6
Gala Apples - 4
Oranges - 4
Red Grapes - 1 Bag
Nestle Cookies (Ultimate Chocolate w/pecans) - 18 OZ

(There will always be a mix of fresh and frozen foods)
A lot of low income people love this program because they get a lot of food, but it isn't a handout.
Good luck finding resources to help!

share is an awsome program to help anyone who is interested in extending their food dollars (and the volunteer time can be something that you may aleady participate in).

as far as medical expenses go, even if they are getting some form of assistance they should apply for their states medicare program. i supervised medical (california's version) and saw many families with good incomes qualify for a share of cost program (similar to a deductable each month-even if it is in the hundreds of dollars per month this can be a huge blessing: we have friends whose 8 yr. old was diagnosed with cancer this past june, in the course of less than a month his medical bills were over $500, 000.00). they should also see if there is a shriner's hospital in their area (shriners will never deny services to a child because a parent is unable to pay-the shriners staff is incredibly helpful).

check into state programs as well, some like california now have limited term disability insurance payments available to parent's who must stay home to care for an ill child (if mom has'nt already quit her job she should see if her employer offers any type of catestrophic leave bank-my neice's co-worker's donated months worth of thier sick leave in order to keep her in pay status when she underwent cancer treatment).

W.I.C. (women's, infants and children's program) can provide vouchers that provide milk, cheese, cereal, protean items at your local grocery store (income based, but more liberal than food stamp regulations).

trying to think of more-check to see if hospital treating knows of any respite care programs (might be able to help with child care for siblings during treatment periods if no family availalbe).

if a major concern for them is thier personal finances (mortgage, credit cards, auto loans...) tell them to look at talking to these lenders NOW. it is much easier to negotiate some form of payment plan during an emergency situation before the credit history has become negative. they may find that lenders are willing to work with them (some will negotiate lower interest rates if you use a consumer credit counseling service: but only use one that does not charge a fee!). both the phone and power companies have lower rate programs that are based on medical need (call and ask for forms).

a last suggestion-because we are getting closer to the holidays: contact the local "volunteers of america" chapter, they often have a "season of sharing" program that can assist with mortgage, utilities, necessities... but the referals for these often are taken in late september/early october for the current holiday year.

contact your local department of health and human services-ask for an IGAR worker (Information, Guidance and Referral):they generaly have all of the information on a data base that can be accessed for your area.

our prayers are with you! god bless. :lovestruc

I am so-o sorry to hear about your friends son- thats a parents worst nightmare! I will keep them in my thoughts. :grouphug:

My prayers are with your friend & her family. My daughter is a cancer survivor. Praise God! She was diagnosed at 14 months with stage 3 Neuroblastoma. We spent 10 weeks straight at Children's Hospital in Boston. She is now THIRTEEN & in PERFECT health! Please offer your friend this hope. Also, always keep her faith strong. Although we don't know why, we must trust in God.

As far as services, many states have their own childhood cancer help/support. The national group is Candlelighter's (I believe, it's amazing how I've forgotten!).

We also found that keeping a journal of our hospital stay and her treatment was very helpful, because you have soooo much information that it is overwhelming.

I will keep her and her family in my prayers...
