Well just realized we need a credit card that has no foreign transactions fees to use next month. None of our current ones have that. Ughhhh. I like the looks of the Chase Amazon one. Anybody else have a favorite?

Whatever you do, don't get a discover card. They aren't always accepted outside the United States.

Barclay World Arrival Mastercard

They support Chip and Pin technology, so will work in many train station ticket machines and the like. Most US credit cards with chips only support chip and signature technology, so they often won't work in the machines and you're stuck finding a manned ticket office.

Barclay has another card, the Arrival+, with greater perks but it has an annual fee. I'm assuming you'd want a no-fee one. If that's that case and you go to apply, make sure you are applying for the Arrival, not the Arrival+. Because the names are so similar, it's easy to end up on the wrong webpage.

My mom just went to her bank to ask which one they recommended prior to her trip to Ireland last year. They were able to get her one with no transaction fees, no annual fee and attach it to her checking account so she was able to easily transfer money to pay off the card when she got back. Plus, since the bank set up the account it only took 5 days for her to get the card in the mail.

How much do you plan on spending? Is the 3% really going to make any difference? I wouldn't bother getting a new credit card just for one international trip.

I have the Chase Amazon and if you shop Amazon a lot, then the 5% back on Amazon purchases makes a lot of sense.

The other card I would recommend is the Chase Sapphire Preferred. It has a $95 annual fee that is waived the first year. It comes with a 50k ultimate rewards bonus that is equal to a $500 credit statement or $625 if you book travel through their travel site. There are no international transaction fees. This card earns 2x on travel and dining expenses so would be a good card for your trip. You can always cancel the card before the annual fee hits.

Chase Sapphire Preferred. I wouldn't open any credit card unless they are willing to pay me at least $500+ to open it. Chase Sapphire gives 50,000 UR points which is one of the most valuable in the miles and points world. You can transfer it to airline partners like Southwest, hotels, etc..

Another great card is the Barclay's World Arrival but I think the signup bonus is at 40k now.

Enjoy your trip!
