Need to be at DTD by 6pm...New Smyrna Beach Possible?

Okay, I DID post this under Other Orlando Attractions, but it's as though no one's looking at that board today, sooo.....

We've got an open day on our trip, but want to be back at DTD by 6 pm for the new Star Wars movie [already have the tix for the 8:30 show on opening day and we'll want to grab a bite to eat and get in line early]...DH doesn't want to drive to Tampa/St. Pete's because of all the current construction work=unexpected delay potential. According to AAA, New Smyrna Beach is about 15 minutes further from Orlando than Cocoa Beach (1 hr. 15 vs. 1 hr. 30). It sounds a bit less touristy (which we like) and we were thinking of checking out Winter Garden or Deeland on the way there or back (heard good things about both places). Is this feasible to do? Has anyone else been to New Smyrna Beach?

We're leaving MONDAY and I'd really like to have this sorted out. It seems silly that this will be our 4th trip to Florida and our DS9 has never seen the ocean! However, both DH and DS will not be happy if Beach Day messes up their Star Wars movie plan!!!

It depends on when you start back. If you run into rush hour traffic (4pm to 6pm) you could be in trouble.

hmm, so is it okay for DS to go another year without having seen the ocean!??! Maybe it would be safer to just find other Orlando things to do?

New Smyrna Beach had a lot of destruction from the hurricanes. In December there wasn't much left, I would check this out before I went all that way. It is such a beautiful beach and they do hope to get it back to what it was but I would think it would take some time. But if you do, it is possible to do what you want as long as you leave some extra time.
