We are now in the throws of planning our Christmas trip to WDW. In the past, we have visited in early December (which required taking the kids out of school). Our children are now in 7th grade and a Junior in High School (doesn't look good on the transcripts to say he missed school to go to WDW for the millionth time, I exagerate of course). Anyway, those of you who are frequent visitors, (more than once a year), do you get any flack from family members about your travel plans? How do you explain to the "non believers of WDW?". My brother already believes that I should be in a "twelve step program" for my addiction to the world(and before anyone jumps on me for the quote, he IS in THE twelve step program!!!). So, should I lie or just admit, we love Disney, we want to be there ON christmas. What do you all think? Thanks for listening. This is my first post to THIS board.

How do you explain to the "non believers of WDW?".

You can't explain it to non-believers. People either "get it" or they don't. Just smile and tell them you are going to WDW for Christmas.

This sounds like the place for you! I would just ignore the 'non-believers'. You don't tell them how to live their lives or where to vacation.

If you have to explain...they just don't get it:D I fretted about taking DS out of school but since extended family was also going thought it more important to have him spend time with his family:D

I took my son every other yr until the 9 grade then started every yr and off we went to DW. Not only did I take my son out in his senior yr. to go to DW 3 months after that I won a trip to Australia for the summer Olympics and I took him out for that. a few of his teachers said I was wrong to do that but hey, lifeis to short. Now my son is in his second yr. at Johnson and Wales in RI and doing great. I would love to find those teachers and say na na na na na. :) Now we still go every yr. but we do it in the summer because I will not ask him to take time off from college, that is going to be his future so we go in the summer.

I agree they either get it or they don't! We take J.C. who is in 5th this year out of school for a week every September and I personally don't plan on stopping. Alot of folks may disagree with me but in 20 years what will he remember from one week of school every year and from one week at DIsney. We always do assignments ahead of time and if need be once we get back. J.C. is a good student with good grades and it hasn't hurt him yet, if it does we may reconsider....heck when hes a teen he may not want to go but I don't feel I have to explain myself to anyone, its my family:D

I know exactly how you feel. My husband and I have the same problem. I would tell them that I am going and they need to get over it.

My opinion-in this day and age it is more important to spend the quality time building the relationship with your child than it is for them to sit in a classroom doing work that you can help them with. After all, WDW is educational is it not?

I have only done this twice. Both times DD was diligent about doing the makeup work, and since she had my undivided attention for that work, understood it better than she ever would have had she sat in class and learned it.

I don't take my son out of school but I've still always gotten the "are you going there AGAIN?" question. Uhhhh, yes I am!

I took my mother to WDW a few years ago and she hated it and made no secret of it. I respect her right to not like the place, why couldn't she respect that I do? I'm also smitten with Arkansas, historic places and ghost towns, and no one blinks an eye at those obsessions for some reason. We have a few friends that go to Vegas over and over and I think nothing bad about that either.

Anyway, I can definitely relate. Just enjoy and be happy that you have something that makes you so happy.

Hi and welcome !

I plan on taking my 2ds out of school the week of turkey day. They only go to school two days anyway that week. This year we are going to CA to see the west coast mouse and the grand canyon and the hoover dam. Better to see that upclose and in person means more to the boyz.

Disney is very educational and promotes that special bond with parents and children that back home may not be possible with everyone's tight schedules.

As for those who don't get it...don't worry. The way I see it Disney represents the "ideal" and gives hope to us who in this day and age may not be able to find anything worth being hopeful about. We, as a family have been very blessed to be able to afford these trips because there were times in years past when my ds and I had to scrape up quarters, dimes, and nickels left from food stamps to buy a $.99 burger from McDonald's.

I see death everyday and hear the crys of missed opportunites and regrets of not enough time...enough to know I don't want to say that.

My motto is "I'm never growing up" and I'm staring forty in the face. :Pinkbounc

I love to respond to the old famous"Are you going to WDW again?" question...I always reply Well yes I am, we love it there ...Can I help you plan a family vacation there. It always shuts them up.....I followed "The Dead" for years and it is kind of the same..... Its a Dead thing you wouldn't understand, except now I change it to Its a Walt thing and if I have to explain it you wouldn't understand. Makes others think you know something they don't;) I would advise against lying ...your child could find out and that would not be a good thing. WELCOME TO THE DIS by the way!!!:D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

Lots of good words said here, so I'm just here to say "Welcome to the CB"!!:) :bounce:
