Took me a long six months but have finally dropped 10 pounds and do not want our upcoming vacation to undo all my hard work.

So what tips do you have not to overeat on vacation (especially the cruise). I will definitely fit in exercising. Want to try all the yummy dishes but what tips can you give me to stop after a few bites? My biggest problem has always been not stopping once I'm full. Help! What do you do to keep yourself from "eating the whole thing."

Hi, PRaffin! First of all, yay you! What a fun thing to look forward to!

Good for you for wanting to stay in charge of your eating even while on vacation! Cruises are hard, because there are copious amounts of food available non-stop. I would think you would be okay if you first eat the things you know will be good for you, and then have a little nibble of more decadent offerings when you're not hungry enough to overindulge. Also, while I may very well be in the minority here, certain things like the Chocoholics Buffet are more appealing as an idea than in reality. Frankly, the chocolate tends not to be the most fabulous, so why bother blowing your progress?

Stick to fresh fruits, salads, grilled meats and fish, and eggs (or whatever appeals to you) for breakfast, and you'll be fine. On my first cruise, I started every day with an omelet filled with tomatoes, avocado, mushrooms, and cheddar, and I felt like a queen.

Why don't you decide in advance how much leeway you feel comfortable allowing yourself -- say, a special drink or a shared dessert per day, or whatever -- and then stick to those guidelines?

Have a blast!

Just think of how many fun things you want to do. If you feel over-stuffed and dragging from over-eating you'll be taking away from the fun of walking on the beach, snorkeling, swimming, dancing... Plus, you'll feel bloated and not as good in a swimsuit.

Last thing - Eat slow!!! Enjoy your meal and talk to the others at the table. This will help you feel more full and not each so much.

Hope this helps! Happy cruising!

On the cruises I've been on they will often mark the healthy choices (lower fat, calories) on the menu. You can also ask your waiter for recommendations. Most servings aren't huge during sit down meals. If you don't like something your server can always get another item for you too.

Buffets are the hardest to deal with since you must do the portion control and avoid calorie packed (but yummy) foods and drink. Items like cocktail shrimp, smoked salmon, roasted meats, fresh or steamed veggies are good choices. I must say that many of the desserts offered on buffets look great but lack taste sometimes.

Do watch those pretty cocktails. Servers will be around night and day offering frozen and other concoctions. Those pack a calorie punch. Limit them and go for the free soda and water instead.

All the cruises offer plenty of fresh fruit. It's good, filling and hydrating also.

I don't have a good eating light tip for cruising, but I will say Take the Stairs! Avoid the lines at the elevator and burn a few extra calories.
Worked well for hubby and me on our last cruise in 02.

Good Luck
