Need some sane advice, have I just gone crazy!?!?

I said I was here for sane advice but I really wanted some enabling! a little encouragement just so I knew I wasn't the only crazy person out there! lol!

39.3 miles yep deffo the long haul for me!

The Goofy will be my first marathon, too. I can do it! And I am way older than you look! I think I have kids older than you! :goodvibes

I am glad I am not the only person who thinks they can do this without doing a marathon previously! We can do it!

I am slightly older then I look, my family tell me I will appreciate it when I am older!

Good luck in your training and see you in Jan!

Kirsty

Oh man - you guys are bad. I am hoping to possibly trying to have a baby in the near future so I have been hesitant about signing up for even the marathon. I knew that if it didn't happen this year at least I would be able to still sign up for the marathon given that it doesn't close until late in the year. But all this talk about Goofy has gotten me well......Goofy. And talk of a "special" medal for the 5th anniversary of Goofy has gotten me even more Goofy. Geez to think just 2 years ago when I first started running I never could imagine that I would ever do a full marathon - 26.2 miles never seemed like something I would want to do but now I am actually thinking of doing 39.3 - I must have lost my mind - LOL All it takes for me is the mention of a "special" medal.

Oh I know exactly what you mean Tricia! I was there in 08 for the marathon weekend and I distinctly remember calling all the people competing crazy, and less that 2 yrs later I have just forked out $300 to run 39.3 miles, I really have gone Goofy!

But I have to agree it was that extra special medal that swayed me, what we wont do for a bit of bling!!!

Kirsty

I can tell you that I felt the same after finishing the full alone as I did when I finished the Goofy. My opinion is absolutely do it. Train for the full but run the 1/2 a few minutes a mile slower than you normally would. You will finish feeling great and thinking that it was an awesome run (because it will be easy from the full training). You will take an ice bath, rehydrate and go in to the full with confidence. You notice how I slipped that ice bath thing in there. It is a must as it will make you feel much better.

If it were not for the cost of the trip, I would be doing my third this year and highly recommend it. There is a different feeling when you go for the goofy than when you don't. There is no way around it but to say that you feel special knowing that you are going to do it and especially knowing you have done it.

For me, the half was simply another day to wake up early. I don't think that it had much affect at all on finishing the full. If that is the concern, don't worry about it and definitely go for it!!!

Thanks for the advice Scott you filled me with confidence that I can do this :)

I keep hearing a lot about this ice bath thing, it sounds painful :rotfl: but if its a must then I need to do some ice bath research lol!

Sorry you couldn't make it this year, but there is always next year.:confused3

Happy running:thumbsup2

Kirsty

Alright, I'm doing it. I'm at work, but I've printed and filled out the registration form, put on my visa number, printed my confirmation from my marathon registration to include with it, and will stamp it and throw it in the mail as soon as I get home.

My fiance became hugely more supportive once he realized that I wasn't actually going to run the half for, you know, personal satisfaction and a possible PR. Once he realized that my entire plan was to jog it, walk a bit, actually stop to take some pictures that aren't just big motion blurs like the ones I took during the 2009 half, it suddenly made more sense to him. And I suddenly realized how much fun it'll be to do the half with no pressure to PR but just to enjoy the experience. If it takes me 3:30, it takes me 3:30. I was so anxious about making my goal time when I ran it this year that I didn't even stop to take any pictures with the characters, and I really regretted that later (although, I only made my goal time by 27 seconds, so I'm not sure if I would have regretted it I did stop!). And then I'll run the marathon the next day as planned.

Alright, so I'm in. And Kirsty, you and me need to hang out some come January; I need to meet my pusher! :rotfl:

Yay for you Sarah! I am so excited for you :goodvibes we r going to look so cool with our 3 medals :cool1: and yes we should absolutely meet up in January, Uh Oh I just realized it will be totally my fault when you ache on Sunday and Monday, sorry in advance lol! :rotfl:

Good luck with your training and stay in touch and let me know how it is going :)

Kirsty

Don't make me come find you when I can't get up Monday morning, because.... well, I won't be able to. :lmao::lmao::lmao:

But really, I think it'll be a lot of fun and it'll feel great to be able to say that I did it. You keep in touch about your training, as well; it'll be great to see how this whole thing works out!

I'll start panicking about this ice bath concept tomorrow. :rotfl:

Sarah

PS - Totally unrelated, but what is an F1 visa, Kirsty? I've done a lot of visa research but haven't come across that one!

F1 is a student visa, so any kind of studying and you need an F1, its meant to be reasonably easy to get but you cannot work on it.

Thats OK Monday is my first day of school, wont I make a good first impression waddling around like a penguin!!! I am hoping my classes dont start till mid week!

We will sort out a chance to meet up, heck I'll be there all weekend lol! I will stay in touch with my training and we will sort something out closer to Jan :)

R u freaking out about the ice bath yet??? I am!

Good luck and see you in Jan :)

Kirsty

Oh right, I remember the F1 visa! I looked into it briefly to find out if I'd need one to take a French class in the fall.... and the answer was no (because it was only one class it did not require a visa - I think to prevent people from using "taking one class" as an excuse to stay in country), so I completely forgot about it.

I'm likely going to be at WDW for Thursday-Tuesday of marathon weekend; I was originally planning to arrive Wednesday so I could run the 5K on Friday, but I think getting up two mornings at 3:00 am is enough for me, I don't need to do the Dopey! I think my husband (which feels weird to say, but he will be by then! :lmao:) will be arriving Saturday night to run the full Sunday morning, which seems crazy to me, but he just doesn't have the holiday days to do anything else!

Do you think sitting around Adventureland all Saturday afternoon and eating Dole Whips qualifies as an "ice bath"?

Sarah

yeah i can take a few classes on my J1 but to go full time I have to change to F1, my J1 runs out in Dec so its really my only option!

I think we will go down thurs night (we only live an hour away) and I might be doing the 5k with the family I live with but unsure right now, then will leave Sun night if I have to go to school in the morning! :thumbsup2

I think sitting in Adventure land eating dole whip sounds like a great kind of ice bath to me, I might throw in a root beer float and a pink frozen lemonade, for a little variety!!! :cool1:

When are you getting married? Congratulations!

I am very excited and kinda wish it was Jan now, although that would mean that I wouldnt have trained at all which would be bad :scared1: so I guess I will just have to be patient! popcorn::

kirsty

Welcome to the "Crazy" club. Several of us are proud members, and other people just don't get it.

I love ice baths, you will too.

This is the Dopey collection. Don't let the gold one's distract you.

Yay! I am part of a club :) even if it is a crazy one I am still happy :rotfl:

Wow that bling is impressive, it make me wanna go for a run right now!!!

I am still liking Sarah's idea of an ice bath but after 39.3 miles I will be open to anything :)

Yep nobody I know thinks this is a sane thing to do, but they wont have 3 pretty medals in Jan now will they  lol :)

See you there

Kirsty

I ice bath after any run 13 miles or longer. Fill your tub with cold water. Put on a sweatshirt, and sit in the water. Add in a few cups of ice at a time, and bring the temperature down. Sit 10-15 minutes if you can tolerate it. Don't sit too long, otherwise you risk hypothermia.

You do not need to dump a whole bag of ice in then sit in.

Good to have a cup of hot chocolate, apple cider, or tea with you.

For Goofy, ice bath after the half, then go out and keep moving until evening. Do not lie around your room. Ice bath again after the full, and keep moving. Monday, keep moving. Rigamortis sets in if you sit or lie still.

Go coast to coast, and you end up with five medals. Here's the 2008 version.

Thanks for the tips, Jeff, my body will really appreciate any help it can get, it will be my first day of a new college on the monday I think I will make a great impression hobbling around!!!

Wow that is some nice bling I wanted the coast to coast this year since I did the princess but funds wouldnt allow me to go to DL so I will have to make do with the fall challenge and the Goofy :) But maybe I can go for the coast to coast in 2010 to complete my collection :) I will start saving now :thumbsup2:

Kirsty

Thanks for the ice bath tips, Jeff! I know I would have been the idiot who filled up a few ice buckets at POP and then went and sat in that. Your gradual method makes a lot more sense to me. :rotfl: Do you go to the park after the half? I've heard conflicting reports on whether that is a good idea, but I'm not sure I could stay away!

Also, thanks for the bling pictures! I mean, when else do you have the opportunity to earn three awesome medals in only two days! I'm getting excited, and still the panic isn't setting in. Awesome.

Kirsty: That's great that you're going back to school! What are you taking? I keep going back to school; it's like my safety blanket for when I don't know what else to do with my life! :lmao: And we're getting married in just over a month, July 17th. I'm really just looking forward to it being OVER, at this point! :lmao:

Sarah

Saturday after the half, we ice bath, then go have lunch. Either we go to the EXPO, or Downtown Disney, or the nearby outlet stores.

We typically have dinner off property, then head back to the room to prep our gear for the next morning. Crash early around 8 or 9 pm.

This is how NOT to ice bath.

Sunday, we hit the parks after our ice bath, and stay out all night long.

Other hints: Watch the weather websites the week before the race. If it's cold, bring some throw away sweat shirts/sweat pants. Wear them up to the start, and toss them into the collection bins. Or wear them during the first mile or two of the race, then chuck them.

I went to Salvation Army last year and bought two pairs of sweat pants. Cost me $3 bucks a pair. Saturday was in the 50's, while Sunday it was in the 60's by the time the race started. I even held disposable hand warmers in each hand until I reached the exit of Magic Kingdom. Other people were wearing gloves.

Jeff you are full of helpful advice! I also was thinking it was a bath FULL of ice but now I am a little less worried about it:cool1: in fact I have been going to the pool after my runs lately (teaching the kid to swim) and I think that is the same kinda think, cool water around the legs, it seems to really help :thumbsup2

Thanks for the helpful hint about the clothes, I discovered this at the princess last year it was FREEZING! and I had clothes over my running stuff when I was waiting to go to the start line and then I realized I had to take it all off and leave it with my family so I could go to the start line (it was things i had just bought at the expo so I wasn't willing to throw it away) I was shivering for like the 1st 6 miles :yay: next time I am definitely putting on throw away clothes, I like the disposable hand warmer idea too, you are just full of good ideas Jeff! :worship:

Sarah: wow that is soon I hope it all goes well, good luck :thumbsup2

I am going back to school to hopefully do Pre Med, but I haven't determined anything on paper yet, I too have been back to school several time because I had no idea what I wanted to do in life :confused3 then when I started volunteering at a local Childrens hospital for something to do it kinda hit me that I would love to be a Dr, I love helping people and I need a profession where I can continually learn and never be bored by doing the same thing everyday, so I am going to school and just get my grades up by doing my sciences and hopefully I can go from there :goodvibes The only problem is, is that it is virtually impossible to get into Med school on a student visa, and it is very expensive, so we will see what happens :thumbsup2

I am excited and terrified too, its only 6 months away now :scared1: but I cannot wait to have those medals around my neck, even if I do have to take an ice bath to do it!!!! I think we might go into the park for an hour or two on the saturday, I am almost contemplating water park, so I can get cooling relief for my legs and wander around a little but I dont know if I would seize up to much laying on a deck chair all afternoon, so we will see :goodvibes
