Try the Scarpetta series by Patricia Cornwell. I also have enjoyed some of the earlier Allison Brennan novels.

Not quite in the same vein; but I have to make a plug for Suzanna Clarke and Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell in particular. It is a wonderful book and not like anything else I have ever read. I have never talked to anyone that did not fall in love with this novel.

In fact, my screen name on here comes from the book.

Mary Jane Clark- I really like her. She is a producer for some TV news show. She writes murder mysteries using a TV crew as part of her plot.

Mary Higgins Clark- Another of my favorites

Agatha Christie- I'm about 1/3 into one of her novels, "The Mirror Cracked". I like her style. The tale is peppered with "Britishisms".

Oh and Wendi Corsi Staub! I read her books over the course of a summer. I love her! She has some great suspense stories!

Mary Higgins Clark
Carol Higgins Clark
Sue Grafton
Janet Evanovich
Patricia Cornwell
Lillian Jackson Braun

thanks for all of these suggestions :goodvibes

to be sure i can find something to read...;)

Kathy Reichs
James Patterson (particularly the Women's Murder Club and Alex Cross books)
Jeffrey Deaver (the Lincoln Rhyme books)

and for something different but still really really good reads,

Greg Iles...absolutely LOVE his books. All are suspenseful, but the subject matter varies significantly from book to book. Some are supernatural, some are spy-thriller-esque, but they are all really good stories.

Sue Grafton, Elizabeth Peters, Patricia Cornwell (except the last 3-4 books), Elizabeth George, P.D.James, Dianne Mott Davidson,

Julia Spencer-Fleming
Deborah Crombie
Judith McNaught
Linda Howard
Gayle Lynds
Judy Mercer

Nicholas Sparks, Kristen Hannah, Luanne Rice, Jude Deveraux, John Grisham, Jodi Pichoult (sp?). There are many others - love Fern Michaels - she has so many out there along with Nora & Sandra. I also read Beverly Lewis, any amish ones I can get my hands on though lately I have become bored with them.

I'm reading Heather Graham right now. My advice is to make sure if you're getting a single book or say 1 book of a set. I know Heather has a trilogy out right now and wouldn't you know it...I have book 1 and 3! :scared1: So now they are shelved until I get book 2.

Jude Devereaux is an excellent writer, but they're more romance than mystery of suspense.

I'm a huge fan of Iris Johansen. Like Nora Roberts, she started as a romance novelist (Harlequin) but now writes excellent thrillers with a little romance mixed in. She's written a series of books about Eve Duncan, a forensic sculptor. Each book introduces other characters and follow up books have focused on them. I like the sense of the familiar as you progress through the books. They're all really well done.

Nora Roberts writes the most awesome books under the pen name J.D. Robb.

Another romantic suspense author I like is Cindy Gerard. Also Marliss Melton and Roxanne St. Clair.
