Need some PS2 Help, Advice

The ds have just informed me that the ps 2 has stopped working. Its not under warranty anymore and tried going on their website which was useless. We would like to try and trouble shoot or fix it ourselves. Anyone else have a similar experience and what did you do? A friend said something might be wrong with the laser disc reader inside? Help and thanks. I told them any expenses or the dreaded replacement will come out of their disney souvenier money for the upcoming trip.

I have heard that the fans tend to get dirty and go bad. Not sure how true this is, but I DO know that they must have some minor problem that causes them to fritz, as EB Games has a deal where you bring in your old "malfunctioning" PS2, and you get a refurb unit for $99. All DS's gaming buds have said it appears to be heat related and hence the thinking is the fans are either dirty or otherwise not doing their job, causing the units to overheat, and not work. As far as opening them up, I don't know. I guess that depends on your own ability. DS had a problem with his Dreamcast and did open it and cleaned it, and now it works fine. Just a few ideas. I am bumping this up. Does any one have any advice for me. I think the ds told me it says disc reader error or something like that.

It could be as simple as cleaning the cd reader. My friend was about to toss his because it couldn't read any of the game cds. I went to his house with one of those cds that you pop in and it cleans the lens. We ran it through a couple of times and his system works fine now. This was almost a year ago and it is still going strong. Good luck.
