went to my mother's the other day and one of the "affluent" neighborhoods I drove through had a house that had put out a lot of stuff for the trash the next morning. Driving by, I noticed a doll on top and immediately thought it looked like an American Girl doll. Did a quick turn around and pulled up next to it. Made my DD13 get out to check it and read the back of the head and it said Pleasant Company on the back. I got out to check since she was upset about looking at someone else's trash and we found 3 more dolls, all with the same writing.

Also in one of the containers was a pile of clothing for the dolls.

The dolls were dirty and the clothes were too. Nothing that can't be cleaned by me outside of the torn bodies on two of the dolls that will cost me $35 to get replaced at the doll hospital.

Now, I don't want to keep them. I plan on selling them for some Christmas money. I don't know how much to charge ? As far as I can tell, these are pre-1996 dolls, one is Felicity Merriman.

I think the others are - Kirsten Larson, Samantha Parkington, and Molly McIntire

I have some dresses and stuff that are in great shape including both of felicity's meet and greet(?) dresses. They are both clean with no stains or marks.

I have no clue what to price them at ? Do I sell them first and let them get sent to the hospital by the new owner (for the two with ripped torso's) so they can have them back in time for Christmas ? It would take 3-4 weeks for repairs and if I sold them first then it would be on them to get them sent out in time to repair it. Do I sell the clothing separately ? Piece by piece ? Outfits together of course.

Also some of the outfits are definitely 80's. Big bright colors, lots of neon and patterns, even on the ski's, ski boots, and roller skates. Even the cast that has crutches with it it neon yellow with pink and blue.

Price idea's ??

Oh, and I also have the full line of the American Girl Mini's that my daughter no longer likes, all in their original box ever opened except for one. Price ?

Thank you !!!

Holy cow! It amazes me what folks throw away. Glad you noticed them!

I would suggest checking ebay for similar items for pricing ideas. (Even if you don't want to actually sell them on ebay. AG stuff goes well on craigslist.) Samantha and Kirsten are retired (and Felicity is on her way out). Some of their particular items go for quite a bit- to the tune of $100+ for a single particular outfit if you have the "right one".

Ebay prices are starting to swing back up after the summer slump. The closer you can wait til Christmas, the higher they go. I would not pay yourself for the doll hospital, leave that to your buyer. There are collectors who would do DIY repairs for less as well. I don't think you need to make the investment (check out the "TLC" dolls on ebay, they still sell!)

The return-by-Christmas deadline for the AG hospital this year is 15 Nov. You would want to get them to a buyer before then.

And if you put them on CL, let me know, lol. NH not that far from Maine. :)

Is $100 too much for a retired doll ?? What about $150 since they seem to be the original dolls ? I know the bodies need some work but they are in good condition otherwise, so $150 plus the $29 or $39 for a new body from AG is still below what I am finding them on Ebay for. How do I know what clothes are for what doll ? I'll take pictures as soon as I clean them.

Pictures will be of great help. Based on the photos posted, you have: Samantha, Molly, and Felicity.. I think. Again, photos will help determine who gets what outfit, the price to charge, etc.

Good find!

 Umm, no. That's how much the dolls are brand new. Retired are even more in demand.

I can't believe they threw all that stuff away!!!

I have the Lindsey AG doll from 5 or 6 years ago...she is now worth anywhere between $700-$900.

If you can, do a little googling to see if you can figure out what outfits go with which doll. I know there is a dedicated AG site on the web, maybe the women there could help you, if you're able to post pictures.

Wow, what a fantastic find!!!!!!!!!!!

And it looks like your Felicity is one of the original readheads. I think at some point, her hair color was changed, but I'm not sure about that.

I think I'd wait til Felicity is no longer available to sell her, since she is retiring. People would probably pay big bucks for her once they can't get her anymore, especially that one since she is older.

I think if you list the others "as is" on ebay and take pics and describe flaws, you'd probably still do rather well without having to bother sending them to the doll hospital. Leave that up to the new owner.

Samantha and Kirsten will also do very well since they are retired, I won a Samantha on Ebay paid $75-shipped, that was the cheapest I could find.

Thats so exciting, wish I could find that in the trash lol, amazing what people with throw away. One person's trash is another's treasure

I got super excited 2 weeks ago I found Nellie (Samantha's friends) in excellent condition at a consignment shop for $60, put it away for DD for Christmas, that doll usually goes for $120-$160.

Here's a website at the top you could click on each doll to try and figure out which outfit goes with which doll, GL!

and let me know when you list anything ;)
we have molly and sam, but not too many of their things, and I think you have some Sam dresses, those will do well too.

I was able to get Kirsten from a consignment shop for $60. What an amazing find! Congrats. :cheer2:

If you want top dollar, have the dolls repaired before you list them.

Make sure there is not a reason they were trashed, like lice infested or something. (I know lice doesnt last long on an object, but make sure it is nothing else.

Also, be aware the AG hospital has been known to replace the dolls rather than fix them. A freind sent her 1986 Samantha to the AG hospital and they replaced the body with a new body. it wasn't a big deal in theory but it was not the same doll to her.

you shuodl defintely look on the boards on Agplaythings. they can help with ideas to list, cost etc. they are the experts. a few ladies on there have multiple dolls so they can also help with aging the dolls properly.

What a terrific find OP! :cool1:

For an idea of prices - do search ebay's completed auctions - it's easier if you sort using highest first and scroll down to the middle to get an idea of average prices.

Samantha, Molly, Kirsten, and Felicity were the first four dolls so there are quite a few out there to be found despite Samantha & Kirsten's retired status.
Right now, there's what I've come to call "archive-fever" around Felicity so she'll likely be the doll that ends up with the most watchers.

IMO - the real ebay profits will be in the outfits/furniture/accessories you found. Sell those individually - not as a lot - and research each item to be sure you have the correct titles. That wood I see looks like Kirsten's table. If so, have the legs been repaired where they meet the bottom of the seat or are they still in original condition? Any scratches/marks/flaws to the table top? I don't suppose it has the early edition "girl/doll reading" logo burned onto the bottom by chance? A table set alone is likely to bring as much as a used doll, often more, depending on condition.
Felicity's white summer dress or her pink birthday dress are also typically bringing more than a used doll right now. Here's hoping you've got both of those outfits hidden in your bag full of treasures! :goodvibes

Brand new dolls, fully dressed in boxes, will be $40 in less than three weeks at the benefit sale so the ebay resellers will load up and there'll be added competition for those holiday shopping dollars. When you can buy a NIB doll for $65-$75 many people won't be looking at used dolls for gifts unless the child requests it by name. If I were selling them on ebay, I'd list the dolls in the next week to have yours sold before the flood of mcm dolls hits ebay searches.

For those who think retired automatically means high-dollar, I just did a quick search of completed items using the title "american girl samantha doll" and sorting from highest to lowest. Please try this for yourself. I only had to go to page 5 to see a whopping total of 28 preowned, fully dressed, samantha dolls sold for prices ranging between $49-$56.55 - and that's just one random page out of 21 pages of completed auctions for samantha dolls. It's interesting to note that Nellie and Nicki are probably the highest selling retired AG dolls right now on ebay - and if you watch even those two can be readily found well under $100, though they usually sell in the $125-$185 range, give or take...

I can't believe they threw that stuff away either. You can bet our neighbor's trash never looked that good! :rotfl2:

SaraJayne -- As a power seller with the extra top-rated status that puts my auctions closer to the top in searches and a collector, I have to say - no disrespect intended - NO WAY, NO HOW - especially recently.

:surfweb: Lindsey's prices have taken a sharp nosedive and she is routinely found on ebay these days for $75 and under. In fact, there was just a buy-it-now I looked at this morning for $75, and another lot with her entire collection that ended under $125 the other day. Even a new Lindsey, mint in box, can be bought right now for $250-$350.

I'm fixing several dolls up for girls who wouldn't get one otherwise. If you can get $700 for a Lindsey in today's market, I'd be happy to give you mine to sell and use the $$ to buy these young ladies brand new dolls for Christmas.
Sadly though, the days of those kinds of ebay profits are long gone. None of the collectors I know are getting decent prices for Lindsey or Marisol in today's market. Poor Marisol is even less valuable, probably b/c AG has introduced not one, but two, new JLY dolls that differ only slightly from her - the main differences being only the hair style/length.

well, those dolls are all American Girl but not as old as Pleasant Company dolls.

here are some images .... Keep in mind I have not cleaned the first three dolls and know that Molly need a new torso

Click here to go to Photobucket and see all the stuff that is marked with "Pleasant Company" name that I found. Including more pictures of the dolls and the stuff.

Looking at the pics I have to wonder, what happened to them? Looks like an animal got to them and bleach or something :confused3
Seeing that their stuffing is coming out maybe I would send them to the doll hospital or post them on agplaythings and see if they could help you with repair.

OP - you do know that some of the dolls being sold today are still marked Pleasant Company on their necks right? It's in the molds they use and most have been changed but not every doll.

Gosh, that is so sad. I don't think I've ever seen four dolls together so totally trashed and I've seen hundreds, if not thousands, of AG dolls over the past twenty-two years since I bought my first one just before DD21 was born.

Molly has silver eye. They'll repair that for free and hopefully take pity on her and replace the entire head without cost if you ask and pay for the body.

All of the fabric bodies probably won't come clean and I'm guessing quite a few of the marks on the vinyl arms/legs are probably there to stay too though, you could try Oxy10 and sunlight on the worst marks to try to remove or fade them.

Those poor girls, they've obviously had a very rough life. It's great that you saved them from the landfill but they're not going to be your easy ebay sales either. Definitely list the clothing pieces individually for best results and good luck with it all....:goodvibes
