In front of my porch on my house I had an old wagon that finally fell apart. I need to plant something in there like a shrub or whatever. What would be good for a place that gets a lot of shade, but gets a bit of evening sun? I would like something that has some color (not just green). Already have Azalea bushes on either side.

TIA

Melinda

I don't really know much about shrubs. Do azaleas survive the winter in Pennsylvania? They have to winter inside here in Michigan. I love azaleas :)

Piglet.....does the porch face the front of the property? The reason I ask is that one of my favorite bushes is the hydrangea - they love the shade and their large clusters of bloom are very beautiful for most of the summer. The drawback is that they lose their leaves in the fall and you end up looking at naked sticks all winter. Not an attractive sight for the front of the property unless you live in a very wooded area.

Hi Piglet! :)

I second the hydrangea suggestion, they're so beautiful. I wish I had room for some.

Here's a link (this is the third time trying this, I don't know why it won't work...grrr...lol), to a site with all kind of hydrangea info, and some fabulous pics. :)
Hydrangeas!

What about a rhododendron? They generally go hand-in-hand with azalea, thrive in acidic soil, grow well in limited sun, are evergreen, have every color bloom except blue...can't think of anything else right now. I'm sure there are varieties that are hardy in your area. I have 5 in my yard and the pink is getting close to blooming. I also have red and purple. I'll post pics when they bloom. They are beautiful.

Thanks for the suggestions. The spot is in the front of our house and it is very wooded in our front yard.

I will check out that website.

And, yes our azaleas survive the PA winters. We are south central PA.
