Our last stay at Poly was a few months ago and we also had a standard garden view room. I researched rooms on the tikiman site and I'm glad I did. You'll see there are several "longhouses" and the first thing you'll want to do is figure out what location your family wants to be in. The most important factors for us was to be close to the main volcano pool and also the main building. So we chose Samoa longhouse. I will attach a picture of our view from our balcony. Yes, it was standard view, but with much research on tikiman site I was able to dig out this gem!
I would also recommend making some dining ADR's ("reservations") at perhaps Ohana Restaurant at Poly if the menu and entertainment interest you. When we stay at Poly, we like to make a few ADR's at restaurants at the other monorail resort restaurants as well since it's really easy to get back and forth. I'm not sure who your family members are, but if you have young children, Chef Mickeys at CR is a fun character meal. California Grille at the top of CR is a great restaurant in which you can watch Wishes from too.
