Need some help with HAIR

So here's my current worry. I'm taking my DNiece to WDW with us in September. I know it will be very hot. My SIL is against have DNiece's hair cut, so it is VERY long, and VERY think (she's 10). I tend to keep my hair between chin and shoulder length, so I'm not good with such long hair. However, I know it will be a nightmere for DNiece in the heat. (Clearly, I've made my ADRs, done all my shopping, and pretty much have run out of things to worry about, but can't yet stop obsessing about the trip).

So, any ideas, suggestions, of some simple styles/tools to tie her hair up and help her out? She can't do much with her hair herself, and needs help just combing/brushing it daily. Any ideas would be very appreciated.

Our last trip was last April, and it was on the cool side and not as much of an issue.

My hair is long and thin. I either place it in a pony right on the top of my head (think Pebbles from the Flinstones) or do a pony at the back of my neck and loop my hair back around. This leaves a loop and your ends sticking up. Glamourous, not, but it works to keep it of my neck.

I'd bring along a whole bunch of pony tail holders. Braid it when she goes to bed at night. Just a simple long braid down the back is acceptable. It will make your job much easier in the morning and prevent tangling. Next, I prefer long hair to in between ear and shoulder. A ponytail is very cool. Messy ponytails are fashionable around here, so don't worry about getting it perfect. She might even want to loop her hair up into the ponytail to shorten it, but I'm not real sure how to describe it.

Just start checking out girls hair everywhere you go, lol!

I would do braids and ponies to keep it off her neck and cooler on her. It should be easy to do as well. Good luck.

Take her to a local Beauty school and have them "corn row" braid her hair across the crown of her hair from front-forehead down to slightly back of head about ear length. then pull the hair that is hanging down into a pony each day. The braids will last for at least 2 weeks, can be washed, swam in and will stay neat, you do not need to do the front of her hair the whole time. just brush the back, she will look very cute and cool. I had this done to my hair before we went and My Mom and I loved it. My hair was to the middle of my back at that time. I suggest the Beauty school because they are reasonable ours is $10. an hour and took about 1 an half hours

End of worries. Have fun. and put sunscreen between the rows!

PS if this is not feasible take a bunch of bandanas, This what I did for horse camp.

I went in August with long thick hair. PUT IT UP WET. That was one of the best tips I got for that trip. It was great. It actually helped keep me cooler. Have her shower in the moriing before you go out and put it up. If you cant twist it just pull it up to the place for a high pony tail and tie it up like a ponytail without pulling the hair all the way through. Dont pull it all the way through any of the times you have to twist the band to make it tight. It'll maybe be messy looking but hey thats fun in the summer!

Side tip, bring spray in conditioner to help detangle it.

Put it up wet, with spray in conditioner. Keep it braided. One other thing that some others have not mentioned: Don't get it too tight. I have very thick hair, which I now wear short but used to wear to my waist. Thick hair is VERY heavy, and too tight of a pony tail would give me terriable headaches.

Thanks for all the help. I think we'll try the "corn row braids" for the front, and then put the rest up, wet, every day (and also braid at night to keep out tangles). I feel better now with some advice (I've never had long hair hair myself).

I'd ask her first about the corn rows. Personally, I don't think most people look good in them. How about asking your niece? At 10, she should have a little say in how she does her hair.

My DD's (7) hair is to her waist. We would either put it in 2 pigtails and braid them. Or we would do 1 pony on top, braid it, then use a second ponytail holder to loop it up. She liked having it in the braided pig tails because all of the characters would play with them.

I have THICk hair... and it is longish...

the easiest thing to at Disney is a ponytail...

I know that messy, messy, falling out ponytails are very in a t my middle school...

have her flip her head upside down, with the hair all flipped over too

keep a pony tail on her wrist while she does this...have her gather all the hair ...this is easiest by opening up your hands, puting them at the top of your forehead, and moving them back until the whole top of you hair is gathered... flip your head back over, and hold the hair in one hand while gathering the bottom in with the other... don't worry if the bottom is not all gathered... the hair will
not be pulled through, but dont worry...

just wrap the ponytail around until it is tight...

it is easier than it sounds...

My DD is 7 and has hair down to her waist. If I were you, I'd learn how to french braid. It's easy, takes me less than 5 minutes to do my daughters hair and it stays in place all day, rides and all. If you do it when it's still wet it will be a tight braid and she can probably even sleep on it at night. I would not corn row it...speak to a stylist as most will not recommend that for most hair types. The breakage issue is serious and if her hair breaks across the front it will be a LONG time before it grows all the way back in. Godd luck and have a great trip!!!!

I understand the point about asking her. I have talked to her about it. She hates her hair, she hates it being so long, and she hates not being able to do anything with it. ("Hates" is her word, not mine). That's why I came looking for advice, since neither of us really know what to do about it. She lives in Northern Wisconsin, so the warm weather is rarely a problem for her though. She can't do much more than leave it down all the time, and its always in her face, in her food, etc.

She'll be visiting in a couple weeks, so my plan was to go through the ideas with her then, and see what she likes best/works best (sort of a trial run while we have time). I'm hoping that it will also help teach her how to take care of her hair and make it more managable.

Sounds like my brothers kids. He likes them to have long hair so they have no say in it and they are about the same age as your neice. I think at 10 if the child wants their hair cut then I say let them cut it...it's their hair!!!

My girls both got the cornrows done in Jamaica and it was GREAT....they stayed nice looking and they could swim all day and their hair was never a problem!!!

When we are at Disney she gets many compliments. The best part is the price, it is about $20 to get it done.

She always get her hair done for gymnastics competitions and the following is a picture of her hair from a competition, so don't mind the leotard, but it will give you a good idea of what it looks like. It will last about 2 weeks with proper care (proper care consist of sleep with a bandana/scarf on her head or satin pillow cover and after showering I spray it with spray gel, that's all.)

It's just another suggestion, but you would have to find someone to do them, most places do I believe.

All my girls have very long hair (well past their tosh) , I used to but it has been cut for LOL 2 times.

Long hair is easy to care for with the right tools. Buy a bottle of detangler (kids kind in the baby section is cheap and don;t be afraid to use a lot) and a good thick toothed comb (for wet hair) and a good long hair brush (dry hair). Lots of good (not cheap rubberbands) pony bands.

I always braid the girls hair if it is going to get wet and fold it in half with another bow with the ends wrapped around. I also used a lot of pony tails down the lenght of hair (think Jasmine hairdo) when we ride rides at Hersheypark or when we went to disney. I wish I could post the pictuures. The pricesses made such a fuss about how cute their hair was.

I would practice before you go and just relax, it will all be fine. Have a great trip!!!!!

I agree thats also called cornrows or french braids.
