Well I proposed to my Fiance last week at WDW. That went great. She loves the ring but it was a little too large. We went back to the jeweler to get it resized and picked it up today. Tonight when she was looking at it she noticed that the ring was pretty badly dented and the diamond was "off kilter" and the prongs were not aligned correctly. We did not notice this when we were picking it up because they were closing and we just picked it up and left.

I called and left a message with them and described the problems. My Fiance is so upset she is in tears and I want to get this problem fixed. I am very nervous as to what they will do

Now I did not pay cash for the ring because I wanted to have some assistance if something was wrong so I payed with credit card.

Can anyone give me advice as to what to do.

Thank you

Most good jewelry stores have a lifetime guarantee about their rings - this happens more often than you can imagine. We've had to have the prongs redone twice on DW's rings, both times it was free. We bring them in every year to get inspected and cleaned.

I would NOT recommend her wearing it - the diamond could fall out and they won't replace that.

Yeah...my wife has her diamond reset from time to time, just to have the prongs tightened and her ring cleaned. It's no big deal, they do that kind of stuff all of the time, typically for free.

On a separate note: Ring too big or rock too big??? When I bought my wife's engagement ring, there was a firefighter who was returning the engagement ring he bought his fiance and she had him return it because she said the rock was too small!! I leaned over to him and said that he might want to rethink marrying this chick and the jeweler agreed. He ended up leaving with the same ring, because he couldn't afford anything bigger...I hope it turned out alright. If your fiance thinks her diamond's too big, then you, my friend, have met the right girl!!

When I got my ring cleaned and prongs checked, it came back and one of the prongs had broken. When I took it back the jewelry store apologized and apologized and apologized! They fixed it - no problem! Give your store a chance to make good.

It's probably just an adjustment that needs to be made as others here have said. But, if you are getting any kind of bad vibe about this store, you might want to be sure that the diamond is your diamond and they didn't replace the stone. The jewelery marts in Manhattan sometimes have unscrupulous dealers who pull that trick.

Yes i have heard of that too. This place is very well known. My roomate knows the owners personally and he purchased his Fiance's ring there too. I just feel so bad for my Fiance. She is so upset and since I have never experienced this before I dont know what they will do. This was very expensive and I hope they are able to repair or replace this without any heartache or trouble. I have not seen the ring since she got it back and I have a feeling that it is not as bad as she describes it but since this ring means the world to her, it needs to be perfect.

Don't forget to have the ring insured -- just in case the diamond is lost at some later time.

From what I understand...engagement ring insurance is not a good investment. I have read that the yearly cost of the insurance can be as much as 20% of the value of the ring, so in 5 years, you could have purchased the ring twice. IMO, as long as she continues to make sure that the prongs on the ring are holding tight by simply taking 30 seconds to check the ring in the morning when she puts it on, there should be no problem with the diamond falling off of the setting.

I would think taking the ring back to the store....on your fiancee's finger...would be the best bet. They should make it right.

I have had my rings (I am divorced) made into a beautiful custom necklace and I have the prongs checked regulary. My jeweler knows I never take it off and I am very particular about where I have it cleaned. My Mom has had to have the prongs on her ring repaired several times...of course it is 44 years old!

PS....I purchased all the rings so I thought it only fair I kept them.

Let us know what happens....

I agree about the stone. I do not see why it would be off kilter if they are just sizing the band! You should always take your ring to an independent jewler (i.E. not the one you purchased it from) and have it appraised in front of you as well as mapped. If you hve it mapped then if they change the stone you have proof they did it. Otherwise...it is your word against theirs.

I paid tons to have my original ring insured and when I lost it they told me that it was not insured for a high enough replacement cost so they gave me the money which was much less than what I paid in insurance. Luckily my aunt had a couple of very nice diamonds that she inheireted so she gave me one. It is huge and what I do now is keep it in the saftey deposit except for special occasions but had an exact copy made for times when I am on vacation etc. I am putting the money I would have spent on insurance away for a new ring but the freedom you feel knowing that you have no worries about wearing your diamond is wonderful. I know it is a sentimental thing but it is only that a thing I learned this when I lost my original.
