SD friends,

My daughter's class has been learning about the 50 states, and she was assigned the state of SD on which to give an oral presentation. We were told to write to the governor to ask for information, but I was wondering if anyone here might know where else to inquire about getting something sent to her? We requested an official visitor's guide from the state board of tourism, but are there any other places/entities that might be willing to send us a book, brochure, state flag, caricature map, or other interesting item that would help my daughter learn more about the state? I'm hoping to keep this free or extremely cheap. Donations from these places would be preferred, but I'd be willing to pay a small amount (or postage fee) if we could get something neat for her presentation.

Thanks in advance!

My son had South Dakotah in 4th grade when they were studying the states. We had to make a "State" cake - they gave us the template for the shape of the state and we had to put it in cake form. They put all the cakes together like a puzzle to form the USA. I felt sorry for the lady who had Alaska - she had to order the cake from a bakery :scared1:.

In any case, I googled the gift shop at Mt. Rushmore and called them directly. The ladies with whom I spoke were thrilled that someone from NJ was interested in their state. I told them I needed to purchase something for the top of a cake, and that I'd gladly pay for shipping. I bought a Mt. Rushmore magnet (it was the only Mt. Rushmore item small enough for the cake) and they said they had a small Corn Palace that would fit. The packed it and shipped it for free . Very, very nice ladies. I would call and see if they would mail you a brochure. I seem to remember them saying they had something on Crazy Horse as well.

Also, the state flower is the Pasque Flower. We cut a picture out of a flower catalogue for his State Book - yes, a scrapbooking project along with a cake!!!

Good luck and have fun!

Try the chamber of commerce in one of the touristy towns, check the website of some of the national parks located there and see if there is an option to get information mailed to you from there, pick a couple of towns and write to the mayor of the town, try this website to see if one of the towns has a map and maybe you can download it from the website: http://www.funmapsusa.com/maps/ Or do a google search, find a school and write to the school asking them to have a child or teacher write back to your daughter telling them something about the school (not sure if they'd actually do it, but it couldn't hurt to try)
