I am at a loss so I figure I'd post here for some ideas.

My very good friend is having her 1st baby in a couple weeks. Her sister and mother are throwing her a shower and I have offered to help. I have been assigned the duty of bringing a dessert to the shower. Great. Except I have no idea what to bring. I thought of making dirt (Jello, cookies, etc). That idea was taken very well.

So I thought w/ all the people on the DIS, someone must have an idea of an appropriate dessert to bring. I imagine it's going to be at least 40 people.

Any ideas? TIA! :wave2: Oh, and she's having a boy in case it's a gender related dessert. And no cake recipes. They have already ordered one.

Something that always goes over great with my bunch is Grape Nut Salad.

1 container cream cheese (soften)
1 container sour cream
1 batch of grapes (seedless)
1 bag of pecan

Mix cream cheese and sour cream in bowl. Sweeten with vanilla extract and splenda to taste. Mix in grapes and pecans.

save some pecans and grapes to fancy up the top.

If your making this for a larger group double the cream cheese and sour cream.

you can buy little graham cracker pie crust 'tarts'...smaller version of the graham cracker pie crusts...then mix a filling, put it in all of them...even can do a variety. I did this once when guests were over....I made key lime filling, banana cream, and pink lemonade, but really you can do whatever, maybe a little chocolate pie or fruite pie. Then each guest can have their own, and choose what they like.

A few of my friends have made baby bootie cupcakes.

I'll have to see if I can find the recipe. They look really cute.

:sad2: I can tell you what NOT to bring. Was at a shower, think it was the last one I ever attended :sad2: somebody brought a bowl of lemon jello with chunks of chocolate in it..called it a bowl of poo* :sad2:

:rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2: Ok now that is just too funny!

do you know if she's having a boy or girl?

what about mini-cupcakes? Seriously - what woman doesn't love the mini-cupcakes you can just pop into your mouth?

make white or vanilla ones and frost them in pale pink or pale blue. (or white with pink/blue sprinkles). Arranged on a "tier" would be adorable IMO!

I love cupcakes, but since they are already having a cake I'd probably go a different route. Maybe blue and white frosted cookies, blueberry tartlets or something similar.

Two really good ideas, both are great for a crowd:
Not Yo' Mama's Banana Pudding --This is sooooooo good. Always a hit!
Recipe courtesy Paula Deen

Recipe Summary
Difficulty: Easy
Prep Time: 30 minutes
Yield: 12 servings
User Rating:

2 bags Pepperidge Farm Chessmen cookies (but these can be pricy, so you can use nilla wafers or other shortbread cookie)
6 to 8 bananas, sliced
2 cups milk
1 (5-ounce) box instant French vanilla pudding
1 (8-ounce) package cream cheese, softened
1 (14-ounce) can sweetened condensed milk
1 (12-ounce) container frozen whipped topping thawed, or equal amount sweetened whipped cream

Line the bottom of a 13 by 9 by 2-inch dish with 1 bag of cookies and layer bananas on top.
In a bowl, combine the milk and pudding mix and blend well using a handheld electric mixer. Using another bowl, combine the cream cheese and condensed milk together and mix until smooth. Fold the whipped topping into the cream cheese mixture. Add the cream cheese mixture to the pudding mixture and stir until well blended. Pour the mixture over the cookies and bananas and cover with the remaining cookies. Refrigerate until ready to serve.

Chocolate-Éclair Icebox Dessert

22 1/2 sheets (about 1 [14-ounce] box) low-fat honey graham crackers, divided
Cooking spray
3 cups fat-free milk
2 (3.4-ounce) packages fat-free vanilla instant pudding mix
1 (8-ounce) tub fat-free cream cheese
1 (8-ounce) tub frozen reduced-calorie whipped topping, thawed
1/4 cup fat-free milk
2 tablespoons stick margarine or butter, softened
2 tablespoons honey
2 ounces unsweetened chocolate, melted
1 1/2 cups sifted powdered sugar

Arrange 7 1/2 graham cracker sheets in the bottom of a 13 x 9-inch baking dish coated with cooking spray. Combine 3 cups milk, pudding mix, and cream cheese in a large bowl, and beat at low speed of a mixer 1 minute or until thick. Fold in whipped topping. Spread half of the pudding mixture over graham crackers, and top with 7 1/2 graham cracker sheets. Repeat the procedure with the remaining half of pudding mixture and 7 1/2 graham cracker sheets.
Combine 1/4 cup milk, softened margarine, honey, and unsweetened chocolate in a medium bowl, and beat well with a mixer. Gradually add powdered sugar to milk mixture, and beat well. Spread chocolate glaze over graham crackers. Cover dessert and tent with foil; chill 4 hours.

Yield: 18 servings

i agree with Not Yo Mama's Banana Pudding. :thumbsup2

i have to bring it to every cookout we go to during the summer. We are not allowed if i don't make it!!!

Since there will already be a cake, I'd probably prefer to stick to something kind of small and light, to complement it. How about chocolate-covered strawberries? They are super easy to make.

I like the idea of something blue, too, since she knows it's a boy. Too bad blueberries are too small to dip in chocolate! Here's a blueberry recipe I love (although it's a little "bigger" dessert than follows my original recommendation):

Crust & Topping:
1 Box graham cracker crumbs
2 sticks melted butter
1/4 cup sugar

Filling:
20 ounces of cream cheese (2.5 8-oz packages)
3/4 cup sugar
2 tsp. vanilla (double if imitation vanilla)
2 envelopes Knox unflavored gelatin
1/2 cup cold water
4 cups prepared Cool Whip or Dream Whip
2 cans Blueberry pie filling

Directions
Mix together all Crust/Topping ingredients. Press all but 1/2 cup or so into the bottom of a large pan. Set aside.

Dissolve gelatin in water. Set aside.

Blend sugar, vanilla & softened cream cheese.
Mix in gelatin.
Mix in Cool Whip.

Spread a layer of cheese mixture onto crust.
Layer of pie filling.
Layer of cheese mixture.
Top with remaining graham cracker crumbs.
Chill for several hours.

If you didn't mind the work, this would be pretty in individual cups, as well. Maybe even add a touch of blue food coloring to the cream cheese mixture to make it a soft baby blue??

Good luck.

Thanks so much for all your help and suggestions! I found what I was looking for on one of the websites posted. Drum roll please-cream filled strawberries.

Thanks again for all your help! :)
