Need some guidance

I wanted to get Dh a DSLR camera for Fathers Day, my birthday and our anniversary but I am not sure where to start. We have two SLR that we havent used in a long while because we like digital but we miss the quality of the slr and the creative things we can do with that.

What we are looking for is a DSLR that is quick between shots, that we can use some of out existing lenses if possible, spend around 500-600.

We take pictures of the kids, dog, vacation(water parks, Disney), nature. I really want to be able to take a decent picture of my oldest DS at one of his swim meets.

If anyone can point me in a direction, I would apprecite it

You did not say what existing lenses you have and what mount they are.

if you have canon the rebel xs(?) has gotten great reviews, with, according to the reviews, the best iq of any of the entry dslr..it's more ( $800) right now. they also have a great instant rebate on the 40d ( 200 off, sturdier build , faster fps, iso to 3200 so around 800 as well). if that is more than you want to spend, the xti is around your $ range and is 10mp, 3 fps, good image quality. the xs has a better focus, more mps, live preview, spot meter. i have an xt and am happy with it. ( well really want the 40d but till i get the $$i'm happy with it)
