Hey everyone - I need some ebay advice. I sold a P90X system, that was brand new on ebay and shipped it out. I got an email from the person that bought it stating they want a full refund as the dvds had scratches and dvd's all over them, and looked well worn, which I KNOW is not true, as they were all brand new and have never been played. In my auction it states that I do not accept refunds. What can I do to cover my butt with this? The item was in perfect condition, and what if he scratched them himself and if I do issue him a refund, what if I receive a damaged product back? What can I do to protect my 100% feedback and not get a damaged product back?

I sold a brand new in sealed package MP3 player. The buyer wanted a full refund because it didn't work and she didn't like it. She filed with Paypal and they sent her a refund. I got it back and it worked fine, she just didn't know how to use it. So I have a used item I can no longer sell and she was out nothing!

Did paypal take the money out of your account?

It really stinks, but ebay normally sides with the buyer. I sold a Vera Bradley purse, the auction ended last monday. I still haven't received payment. The person's ebay name is skankyrooster :scared1: with ZERO feedback. I'm sure I won't get payment. If people aren't going to pay why do they bid?

Ok, didn't mean to hijack your thread...rant over :goodvibes

BTW, Paypal will just take the mony out of your account. No warning, No nothing. If you don't have any money in there, you will have a big fat negative. Soo nice of them....

Welcome to the new world of eBay.. It stopped being "seller friendly" a number of years ago and has consistently gone downhill since.. Buyers want something for nothing now and thanks to the new rules, they can often accomplish just that..

I hope you get it straightened out - but I wouldn't count on it.. I stopped selling and buying several years ago and I'm so glad that I did! I get enough aggravation in every day life without adding hassles from buyers, sellers, eBay, and Pay Pal - only to end up making a few cents on the dollar (not to mention all the time and work involved).. Ebay took a "great" thing and turned it into trash.. It's a shame - because at one time I really enjoyed it..:sad2:

I've been selling for years and this is the first time that I've ever had a problem. I've never had to deal with this before. I always ship well, and buy delivery confirmation, and state my auctions as is and describe them well. What I'm really worried about is that the buyer damaged the product, and now wants a refund for it.

I would tell them you will refund less shipping and restocking fee if they return all parts in the same condition they were received and they must still have your hidden mark on them (many sellers have a special marking pen that only shows up under black light just for this reason but your buyer doesn't know you didn't put a hidden mark on it). Only then would you consider a refund. Hopefully this will make him go away :) It is best to try to take care of it before he files a paypal complaint because then he can basically send you back a box of rocks and he gets his money back...

Or, they already had a bad set of disks or just purchased a used set that are bad and will now swap them with the good ones you just shipped out and you'll get their POC disks. Is there anyway to search P90X auctions for the last X months to see if this person purchased a different auction recently?

not a bad idea.

You really are just out of luck.

I sold an item that the buyer then DAMAGED and returned and paypal sided with them. I had the photos still up on my auction that showed the color and condition of the item and sent photos of what the buyer returned to me that she had damaged and paypal STILL sided with them. The buyer sent me a nasty "ha ha I got my money back" email after paypal refunded her. There wasn't a thing I could do about it. I was out the item and the money. I had to throw the damaged item away.

Back when I was still selling, I ran into problems with two buyers.. Both times the items were brand new - still in the box.. One claimed it was "used" and one claimed it was "damaged".. Rather than ruin my 100% feedback, I refunded them their money.. That was right about the time I decided to stop selling on eBay - and the situations for sellers have gotten so much worse now.. I think I got out at just the right time.. I don't need those kinds of hassles when it's so much easier for my son-in-law to sell my/our stuff on Craigslist for more than we could get on eBay..

To those still having success, I wish you well.. However, you are going to find these situations happening much more frequently now (as many all ready have) and the "seller" is now considered in the wrong - no matter what :(..

That's why I only sell on Craigs List now. Cash and carry.

:thumbsup2:thumbsup2

Definitely the way to go - can be done quickly, efficiently, and safely - if people get "all their ducks in a row" before they start.. Who doesn't love cash without all the hassles?? ;)

Oh how I would love to just do CL exclusively...unfortunately I find it produces less sales and more no-shows. Our local CL boards are very busy but I just can't seem to get people who are interested in my stuff. Right now I'm selling brand new Graco TurboBooster seats for $40 obo and have had only 2 inquiries! I also have about a 50% no show rate.

Ebay has definitely left a sour taste in my mouth over several transactions but I have not yet been burned too badly so will keep selling as long as I'm making money.

OP - another thought - did you happen to have insurance on this item and you shipped via USPS? You could tell them that you sent it perfectly - if they are claiming damage, it must have happened in shipment and you would would be happy to open a case with the post office and have them come inspect the packaging and items - if you can slip in there that lying is a federal crime without insulting them, that should stop them in their tracks as well. Good luck!!!

I'm willing to bet he got the set, burned himself some copies, and now wants to send the DVDs back. I think if you fight him over the refund he will more than likely damage them before sending them back. I would just go ahead and refund him. Paypal will side with him anyway and take the $$. That way you may actually get them back in their original condition. Sorry he's such a dud buyer!

The reality that buyers can rip you off is so prevelant and widely accepted now that the new trend seems to be for for other sellers/collectors to buy (at what are now rock bottom prices for ebay b/c of summer & the economy) and then file "not as described" in an effort to get their money back.

I'm always very careful to note any and all flaws I find, yet I've been hit with two "collectors" in the past few months who are disappointed b/c - as they freely admit - they didn't read the description or bother to enlarge the 6-8 photos in the auction. One NIB doll I sold is already listed by this wonderful self-described "collector" at more than double what I sold it for, however according to her complaints last week, it wasn't even worth the postage to send it back b/c the factory now sews a tag into the body seam that they didn't fifteen years ago.
Next month, when it hasn't sold at her outrageous price after a few relists, I suspect it'll show up in the mailbox and I'll have to refund in full. After all, today sellers can't afford the hit to their DSRs so, if we want to continue to sell, we have to play nice even when the other guy doesn't...

My BBL list is growing way too fast these days, filled with problem bidders from not just my transactions but every seller I know, and those great bidders whose feedback left comments are so horrible that nobody is willing to chance selling to them just in case. Ironically, many of us have also now blocked the sellers who we know routinely buy cheap and re-sell items in our category - those bids were once welcome guarantees that you'd get a fair price for your widget by the time someone outbid them, now they're a potential risk too if the market drops too badly and they can't make a good profit reselling your item.

I'd like to say OP will prevail, and fairness will win out in the end, but that's be about as rare these days as calling wdw to book a week at all stars and being offered the castle suite free instead.:sad2:

That is what crossed my mind immediately when I read this
