I'm a long time poster who wanted to post this annonimously. Read on and I'm sure you will understand why.
Last night my DH & I had a bit of male contraception failure. (I'm really trying to make this as PC as possible so I don't get in trouble)
The first day of my last menstural cycle was August 16th.
How soon can I take a pregnancy test and have it be accurate and how does the morning after pill work?

Huh? Today is August 16th. If you started your period today, I think you're safe.

eta: Okay, since you're talking about day 10 or so, I'd be concerned. What length are your normal cycles? Those who have periods every 4 wks or so are correct that typically day 14 is the 'big' day; however, my natural cycle is only 23 or 24 days (yeah, lucky me) so my conception day with all three of my boys was between day 11 and 12. I'd call my gyn's office if I were you.

Usually about 5 days before your period is due to start, you can try the First Response pregnancy test. That one will show a positive at a lower hormonal rate.

The morning after pill is just high level progesterone that will make it impossible for a fertilized egg to implant. You need to get this right away if you want to try it. It will probably cause some cramping and bleeding--like a very bad period.

I'm sorry. I meant August 6th.

Hopefully you will be okay. Today is day 11 of your cycle. While it is a fertile period of time, it is not as bad as day 13! If you are very concerned (and it sounds like you are), please call your GYN this morning and get a prescription for the morning after pill.

I used the First Response last summer and it didn't work until the day my period was due.

Do you have an OB/GYN you can call?

If you were on day 10 of your cycle there is a chance you conceived but usually it may happen around day 14. It all depends when you ovulate.

I am so regular and I ovulate 2 weeks after the first day of my last period, usually.

Good luck to you. :grouphug:

I spoke to my Dr. and he is going to write me a script for the morning after pill.
I'm absolutely aware that there is no way we are in any state to bring another baby into this world and that this pill is the responsible option but why does the thought of taking it make me physically ill?
I'm sitting here close to tears at the prospect of what I have to do.

If this is the case, I would suggest also getting a script for a more reliable method of BC.

You're going to be okay. I know everyone has different feelings on this, but honestly, you are just not allowing a possibly fertilized egg to implant. This is nothing different than what most birth control pills do each and every month (albeit more gently). The morning after pill is going to create a hostile environment so that a pregnancy cannot occur.

I understand that you are upset and I hope you feel better about this soon. No ONE wants to have to do it but you're smart enough to realize that children would be a disaster for you at this point. Please don't beat yourself up. You're doing what's right for you at this point in your life. HUGS!! (The smilie's not working).

just be prepared to feel nauseous when you take the morning after pill. it's like doublling p on your regular pill. I felt yucky for about two days. Hopefully, you won't go through that......good luck.

FYI, when counting to see when you ovaluated, it's actually 14 days BEFORE your period begins, not 14 after your last one, so it's a little trickier to say when you ovulate that most believe unless you have an exact cycle all the time.
