Hello fellow Dis'ers. I need some advice. How does one go to work everyday when they hate...no, despise their job? I mean really despise their job. Everyday I got to work I need to watch what I do because my fellow co-workers will complain to my manager everytime I am in a bad mood. You see, I can have a short fuse when it comes to my bad moods and it's gotten me into trouble at work. On two different occasions, i came into work already in a bad mood. For what ever reason I went off, had a little rant. Granted it was in poor judgement and I apologized to my fellow co-workers. I told them that that was wrong of me to go off and I apologized for it. Well, someone complained to my boss and I got in trouble. But what's even more funny, is that someone had a rant in front of a client (I work in a copy center at a large law firm) regarding a change that client made to her job. I was truely embarrased for this client and felt bad for her...but guess what. That person who had her rant didn't get into trouble. I'm talking to my manager about this today so hopefully I'm going to nip this in the butt now, but how do I prepare myself mentally to go into work everyday? I try to think of all the overtime (to pay off my bills), or think of my vacations I had to Disney World, but it doesn't always work. So how does other people do it? I really could use some advice. Thanks in advance.

You probably do not want to hear this but.......

I was not only in a job I despised but a profession I despised. (I was working as a RN in a very large hospital) I finally had to accept that I was not cut out to be a nurse and I went back to college and got my BDH. I am now a registered dental hygienist and life is good!:sunny: I look forward to coming to work everyday!::yes::

Not a whole lot of help from me to offer, BT, but first, I would suggest to start looking for another job, whether employer, type of work or whatever. Hating your job as much as you do must help add to your short fuse problem. And while looking for a new job, work on your personal side in controling your anger. You know the problem, that is the first part, often the tough part.

Good wishes in whatever you do.

Dan

I despise my job. I guess I get through every day knowing I'm lucky to at least have a roof over my head and a bed to sleep in.
That's more than some people have.

I think you need to exercise some self control. It's not your co-workers problem if you are in a bad mood. What makes you think its ok to take your mood out on anyone else? Until you figure out what is causing your bad moods and how you should deal with them you will have trouble with any relationship (friends, coworkers). If you worked for me and went off on people in my office you'd be fired.

Have you considered talking to a counselor that specializes in anger management? Sometimes speaking to a professional can really help change your perspective on things. Life is too short to be angry all the time. Maybe a counselor can giving you some tools for coping better.

Join a support group for people who hate their jobs.

It's called everyone, and they meet at the bar.

See you there.

Well, as for the bad mood thing and "rants" at the office, I'd try to stop that at all costs. That will absolutely "get you nowhere" and it might...literally!!

As for hating your job...consider a change. My DH HATED his career as a stock broker - our family suffered because of it. He finally took the chance and quit, and within two months, we had moved to a new state and he had gotten a totally different job. We did struggle financially for a few years as he had to "start over", but now we're doing great and he's HAPPY!!! Would he like to win the lottery and stay home? Sure, but until then...

Good luck!

Life's too short to be miserable every day. Find a new job.

Stop the rants at your current job. Your co-workers don't want to listen to your crap. If someone else rants and doesn't get in trouble, that's not your issue. You shouldn't be ranting, and neither should they.

Before you totally change careers, change law firms 1st. I am a partner at a large law firm and we are known for being very polite and collegial to everyone in the organization. (In my 19 years here, with all the [legal] things I've screwed up, the only thing I ever really got in trouble for was being less than nice to someone in the accounting department.) I bet you could find a firm where everyone is nice.

Another alternative would be to start your own legal copying business. As you know, there's more to legal copying than just putting paper in a machine, so you could put your expertise to work. I know two guys making a nice living with their own legal copying companies.
