My 8 YO DS has ADHD. He started 3rd grade in Sept.

1st week of school I get a call from the teacher - the 1st thing she asked was if we had thought about increasing his meds because he was fidgety. I explained it took a long time to get his dosage correct, then we discussed how he was doing in school. I was really taken aback at this coming after 5 dyas, especially since she is not a doctor!

Since then he has gotten detention for every little thing he has done wrong - from swinging rope during gym to talking out during music. I asked the school psychologist to get involved, and she observed him in several situations didn't notice anything wrong.

It was bocoming clear this teacher just did not like him. When she spoke to the physcologist, the teacher said he was manipulative - well, any other word but that coud be used to describe him.

Last week, he was bitten by another child (he was singing a song and when the kid asked he didn't stop during lunch) He wouldn't tell ("I'm not a teller"), but finally told after the kid threatened to bite him again 2 days later.

Tonight, the teacher called us. She explain that DS had provoked this kid, and that was just as wrong. No punishment for the kid, and my kid was spoken to. Does this mean the kids at Columbine deserved what they got because they 'provoked' the killers! What kind of a teacher is this?

So, we want him moved out. This teacher has a preconceived notion about him and ADHD, and her attiture that the victim is wrong is something I cannot tolerate.

So, advice - we're calling the Principal on Monday, and will request a move. But the school is usually reluctant to change kids. What should we be prepared to do to get him moved

Anyone been through this before?

Help!

Speak to the principal.

If that doesn't work, request a CSE and see if they can't somehow arrange a change. If nothing else have his IEP modified to allow those specific ADHD behaviors that he is being punished for. A child should not receive negative consequences for something that stems from his disability.

Once it is on his IEP, the teacher has an obligation to follow it and the district has an obligation to ensure that she does.

I would also mention the biting episode during the CSE, as well as, her request to increase his medication. The comment about medication was most DEFINITELY inappropriate.

Ripleys mom gave you good advice. Our district does not like to make chages either, but they have done it, I even know of one case where they switched classes in Feb. Stay firm with your request it is not that far into the year yet. I would definetly feel this teacher has it in for your son, she could not possible know him well enough the first week of school and to talk about med. dosage I feel is way out of line. My SIL had a problem like this last year in kindergarten with her son and she tried to work with the teacher, but ended up regretting it.

Another kid bit your son? You said grade three, right... not AGE three! Were there any marks? In third grade, biting should be considered a physical assault, and should be handled as such! Any looking the other way is simply inexcusable.

And, if your son is bona-fide diagnosed, the other posters are correct. He needs, and should be guaranteed, a teacher who can meet his needs. Not antagonize him.

I wouldn't want to be in a similar situation, requesting a change. With my DS school principal.... No way would it happen. He is a real you-know-what who is only concerned with himself. He has zero concern for any individual student. And, parents? Well, we should just put our kids on the bus and stay out of his hair. He considers parents to be nothing but a nuisance... HE is running that school, HE knows best, etc. Parents are routinely told "we can't do things for any one student... there are 700 (or however many) students in this school. (Translate: Your child is just a number..... go home and shut up.....) I tryed to meet my DS, a new Kindergartener, for lunch. I wanted to meet him at his room, as he was having issues with the before-lunch routine. As a parent, I should have been given a visitors pass with a smile... I was told that "The principal doesn't want parents to enter the school during classroom hours....) I was LIVID....

If I were in a similar situation, I would have to go to the Superintendant's office.

Good Luck!
