We have a wallpaper border in our daughter's room and it's currently painted with Lowe's Kid Zone paint in a cream color.

I know nothing about wallpaper or repainting, so that is why I am asking.

How do you remove the wallpaper border? Once you do, in order to repaint the room, do I just paint over what she has now or do I need to do something else.

Thanks!

I removed the border in my sons room last year and if I knew what it was going to be like I never would have put the border up!:crazy2: It was a long process partly as I learned about half way through the room the best way to do it. I asked in Home Depot and they told me what materials to use. I got a scoring tool for wallpaper removal, the one I got is made by Zinsser and called Paper Tiger. It is round and fits comfortably in the palm of your hand, you run it around the wallpaper in circles and it perforates the paper. Then I sprayed on DIF wallpaper stripper spray gel, also made by Zinsser. The gel seeps into the holes so you can scrape the paper away with a large putty knife or scraping tool. My mistake in the beginning was that I did not put enough holes into the paper, you really need to have lots and lots of holes on the entire surface. Also I sprayed large sections at a time then I found it best to only work in small sections at a time when spraying on the gel. When I worked in small sections with lots and lots of holes, and you can see when the paper is absorbing the gel, it was easy to scrape off. If there are not enough holes, when you scrape off the paper lots of small areas are left and it was a lot more work to get these off. After the paper was removed I sprayed the gel on again and cleaned the wall with a wet sponge, when it was dry I was able to paint. Sorry this was so long, if you have any questions let me know.

I've never had a problem removing borders (entire walls of wallpaper are a different story).

I pulled off as much border/wallpaper as I could and then I sprayed DIF on it, let it sit for a few minutes and scraped the rest off. I washed the walls and painted. No problem!!

The DIF came in a bottle and had to be mixed with water. I honestly didn't measure anything, just put it in a spray bottle and added water.

Good Luck!

Two years ago we moved into a house with LOTS OF UGLY wallpaper. I invested in a steamer. It makes this rotten job much better. I try to pull off as much as the outside layer as possible - sometimes the corners are not glued down very well. Then use a spray bottle or sponge and soak the paper.
Steam the wet paper and it falls off the wall. If you can't get the upper layer of paper off by pulling, then you have to sponge and steam both layers. The secret is to use plenty of water! Frankly, this is the easy part. I hate washing off the glue!

OR worse sanding down the glue. Ok, we'll scare her! Taking off a single border is no big deal. The steaming and scrapping and layers is when you're redoing an old house where the previous owners papered over paper.

The worst I had? SIX layers!!!!! I think we added 3 inches all around the room when that one was done.

As for repainting just make sure you're putting latex over latex or oil based over oil based. Check diy website for more details on prepping for painting.

This is perfect advice. I'm thinking about re-papering or painting one room in my house. Some of the old paper is already peeling off. First I need to clear the room out then I'll tackle the walls.
