We used to have an e-mail account with AOL, but we have been unhappy with their service, and discontinued them.

We have been trying to get an e-mail account with our phone service, iowatelecom, but we have had all kinds of problems accessing our messages through them.

Do any of you have suggestions on easy, reliable, ways to establish e-mail accounts? (Cheap would be good too!) We have a 1 year old Dell, with dial-up access on a dedicated phone line. Our Internet browser is Explorer.

Thanks ever so much!!

You could try hotmail through MSN, it's free! And, it's got a really cool name! HOTMAIL! I like it!

Good luck!

I've had a hotmail account for a number of years and haven't had any trouble with it. The best part is it's free.

YAHOO

they just up there storage limits

Cool!

So, what do I do? Go to MSN website and look for Hotmail?

Yes. Go to the MSN webpage, and there should be a link to hotmail from there!

There's Hotmail, Yahoo, Lycos. All these are free and accessible through the web. The downside to free is the number of ads you'll get.

Since you have dial-up access, don't you get an email address with your dial-up?

If you do a google search of free email accounts, you'll see tons pop out.

We've not figured out how to access this yet . . .

We have Comcast cable connection at home but I've been using my hotmail for years without any problems...and Yahoo should give you the same basic, reliable service too.

You can just go to www.hotmail.com and there should be a place to register.:)

Do you have Outlook Express?

If you do, then you'll need to know the POP and SMTP server addresses of your dial-up provider. These are the outgoing and incoming mail servers where your emails come initially.

Call up your provider and ask them. It should be something like POP-server.neo.rr.com
or
POP3.ispprovider.com
or
POP.ispprovider.com

same goes for the SMTP.

Typically your dial-up account username and password are what the email account will use.

Hmmmm, don't know. I know DH was on the phone with our provider for quite a while last night and was asking about Outlook Express. I know about Microsoft Outlook, but I don't know about Outlook Express.

But thanks for the instructions oogieboogie!!

Microsoft Outlook is pretty much Outlook Express.

Yahoo
Mail.com
Hotmail.com
Netscape.net or .com

I have all these email address and all is reliable.

I have 2 email addresses at yahoo and one at hotmail. If you don't set up very specific filters at hotmail, or pay extra you will get a TON of spam mail. It's all I ever get. I get no spam at Yahoo though, and as monkeyboy mentioned they just increased their storage space DRAMATICALLY. I went from having 55% of my storage limit filled down to 2 % filled, keeping all the stuff in my account. I have had no problems with Yahoo. Hotmail has gone down many times before.

Ooooo, thanks for the tips, monarchfan16.

Looks like Yahoo is the way to go . . .
