Need recommendations for a campground in Williamsburg

We thought we would head up to Williamsburg next week for acouple of days. I've read alot of reviews of campgrounds but still can't decide on which one to stay at. Anybody been to Williamsburg and have any thoughts - - - the good or the bad would be appreciated. TIA

We stay at American Heritage. It has mostly pull thru sites. Some have concrete patios but the sites themselves are gravel. Kids might be bored here however.....the only activity is a small pool. Anvil campground gets many complaints because of the RR tracks that run right next door. Trains run throughout the night. The Pottery campground was very run down and in need of a major overhaul as of 2 yrs ago. I avoid KOA's in general because they tend to be over priced, and its just my husband and I......so we don't need the extra activities they provide. However if you are traveling with children this might be an option for you. Enjoy your trip! Be sure to stop in Yorktown and head down to the waterfront and have a beer , bowl of clam chowder and a crabcake sandwich at the Yorktown Pub.

I appreciate that information. I was thinking about American Heritage and it sounds like a good choice. No kiddos so that's not a problem with lack of activities. We always use to stay at KOA but they are getting way over-priced for our needs.

BUT I really like your suggestion on the Yorktown Pub - that's one place I won't have a problem getting hubby to go to (unlike shopping at the outlets ).

Another recommendation for American Heritage here. Spent a week there 2 years ago and it was a great base camp for my family to explore the area. In fact, we will be stopping back there at the end of May on the back end of our 3 week trip around the northeast US.

AH management is very nice, and the campground is maintained well.

Is that the campground right across from the Jamestown Settlement? When we saw it a couple of years back (never went to it) thats what got us back into camping. We thought how neat it would be to camp so close to Jamestown and Colonial Williamsburg with the grandkids. I"ve seen other reviews which weren't favorable, so whats wrong with it?

Jamestown Beach Campground closed and is now a county park/recreation area. They closed the campground and made it a park to be used when the did the big settlement anniversary presentation that the President attended. I think it has been a park for 2 years now.

We go often and stay at the Newport News Campground. It is very close to everything, heavily wooded and secluded, has a great lake for fishing/boating, archery, bike trails and is just a pleasant place to stay. We haven't tried AH, although we did drive through once and it looks bright and nice.

And I think what Ami means by "bright and nice" is that AH is basically an open field. I still recommend the place, as it is clean, well run and makes a nice base camp to explore the area, but Ami makes a good point by mentioning Newport News Campground. If you prefer a nice woodsy campground, AH may not be your cup of tea.

Well, Dave....you have the ability to read between the lines I would like to try AH sometime though!!!
