Need reading help for DS12, need an antonym

That's two words - so which do the want the antonym for? What an odd choice..:confused3

How about "paper sack?"

Honestly, I don't know. Antonyms for nouns are pretty difficult. :confused3

Could it be that he really needs to find a synonym?

using a shallow and rectangular briefcase as a definition- how about a large deep recycling bin?
You are carrying things in an attache- you are throwing things away into a Recycling bin?

I just did antonyms with my students today.

I guess the opposite of an attache case would be a larger storage item such as a steamer trunk, or duffel bag.

The paper is called a semantic web. the original word or words are in the center and there are boxes that branch off. One for definition - a narrow box shaped case, sentence - Kenneth is my older brother who is married and carries an attache case to Wall Street every day., Synonym - breifcase, antonym - ??

I like this one. DS is a little wary but I think it will work. Thank you.

No, no, no, you guys are way off. The opposite of 'attache case' is 'no attache case'. :lmao:

oooohh, duffle bag would be good too. I had thought about backpack or something like that but it's still a closed container so I wasn't sure if it would work.

Actually in thinking about it- maybe a toilet is better? Because it is round? And you can't carry it? (plus bathroom humor always works with the 12 year old crowd)

OMG too funny. I don't think Ms. M would approve though. She has about as much humor as a wet towel.

I don't think there's an antonym for that.
That's like trying to find an antonym for "cat" or "tree." You just can't do it. "Antonym" denotes an opposite and there's just no opposite for briefcase.

That's what DH said. I asked DS if he picked the word and he said yes but it was on her list of words they had to choose from. I don't think DS knew what attache meant since he can't even pronounce it correctly.

Could it be possible she is referring to an attache' (a specialist assigned to the staff of a diplomatic mission?) If so, then I would say something along the lines of agent, delegate, diplomat, or something similar.

If she is referring to an attache case (a shallow and rectangular briefcase), then I would go with a trunk, luggage, or something of the sort.

Good luck!!!!!:thumbsup2

OK, DS is going with recycle bin. I also had him define it as a large, deep open container.

I'll let you know if she has a cow about it, which is more than likely. ;)

he said it had the word case with it.
He's reading The Pigman by Paul Zindel, so the assignment is connected with that book. I've never read the book so I have no idea what the story about.

I use semantic webs. I actually like them but my students are just learning synonyms and antonyms.

An no, and I would actually giggle with No attache case.

I like the semantic webs too. They are pretty self explanatory and help the kids see the words in a new light, especially with the synonyms.

I'm glad you would find the no attache case funny, I have never come across another teacher like this one. Seriously she has no social skills whatsoever even with her colleagues.

You haven't read the Pigman? It's an older book-- I think it came out in the mid to early 70's. I read it when I was in 6th grade back in 1981 and they are still teacing it!?

Its about two kids (boy and a girl) who by today's standards would be not quite but semi delinquents.. they aren't serious about school, like to goof off. It is sort of implied that they could be "druggies", but they really aren't.

Enter the Pigman. The Pigman is an elderly person these kids try to scam (he has a real name like Louis Piglioni or something like that). IIRC, the kids were trying to either rob or scam him and they start to like him... Piglioni becomes the Pigman to these kids. I recall one scene that the kids use the Pigman's house for a party and I think Louis comes home to see the place a mess. .. I think he either has a stroke or heart attack.
