Need quick fix for tape grabbin' VCR

My friend gave me an old used Zenith VCR to hook up to my basement tv (no reception at all!). It is hooked up, and it plays, but when I hit eject and pull the tape out, it doesn't release the tape properly. I have to gently guide the tape film out and manually wind it back into the plastic tape. Seems like it is not releasing the tape film. Is there an easy fix to this, or is it one for the garbage?
