Need Opinions- Fly or Drive

My husband and I are planning on taking our niece (8) and nephews (10 and 14) to Disney next summer and possibly their step-sister (11) if parents get that worked out.

We are just starting the trip planning and trying to get or travel plans thought out.

The biggest question right now is do we fly or drive. We are looking at this from both a cost and sanity perspective!

We are trying to keep the costs reasonable because a week at Disney with 3 (and possibly 4) kids is going to be costly when you add in park tickets, food, etc. We will most likey stay off site at a timeshare (but would be willing to stay on property if an awesome deal comes up). If airlines prices next summer are similar to what they are this year, the cheapest flights I found were Allegiant Air from Greensboro NC to Sanford for a little less than $700 (this would be flying Sunday both directions b/c we probably won't be able to fly mid-week). All other flights in our area are currently over $1,000 for us all (but most others fly into MCO).

Driving would certainly cost us much less money, but, we are also not used to travelling with kids. We have a very talkative little girl a typical moody teenager and a middle child that is either going to be picking on his little sister or will be picked on by his big brother. I'm sure with three kids, there will be numerous bathroom breaks along the way. I imagine the trip down would be okay. Everyone will be excited and ready to get there. Something tells me the trip home wouldn't be so much fun though. A week at Disney is tiring for both kids and adults. For those with kids around this age group, any advice on what the typical "mood" is in the vehicle during a 12 hour trip home from DW?

Also, hubby drives for a living so once he comes back from vacation he'll have to jump in a car and go back to work. If we drove, we'd probably come back on Saturday and he's have to turn around and drive another 350 miles on Monday so he wouldn't get much break from sitting in a car.

So, what would you do in this situation- fly or drive and why? (I also welcome any advice you have on travelling to DW with this many kids- first trip for all of them!!)

I would personally fly. We got back last week and flew for the first time to Disney. We all felt so much better! We only live 20 to 25 min from Charlotte-Douglas and flew US Airways for apx $750 for 4 round trip. We looked at Southwest out of GSP which is 30 min drive and their rates were close to $1000. We'll never drive again to Disney. The kids thought it was so fun and couldnt believe that we got there so quick. Before I forget we also looked at Allegiant out of GSP to but the kicker with that was they fly into Sanford.

We fly. From Pittsburgh, we'd probably stay overnight "somewhere" both on the way down and back. That adds to the cost. Our large car gets about 15 miles to the gallon - we would use it to be "comfortable" and with that mileage, cost of fuel adds up quickly. And then, all that time in the car, "on vacation", but NOT at WDW would be hard for us. Overall, the DIFFERENCE in cost between driving and flying is well worth flying for us. (remember, it's not free to drive)

If I'm reading your post right, you've got 5 people, maybe 6 traveling. If you can get them all for $700RT, jump on it! If prices skyrocket next year, you can always drive.

If the prices you gave are one way, THEN I'd question the decision. Now you're looking at ~$1500RT.

You've got to get a good comparison of costs between the two (don't forget added meals while driving), what kind of shape your vehicle is in, do you have someone who "likes" to drive? Once you figure out the difference (and driving WILL be cheaper), you need to decide if the added cost to fly is worth it for what it gives you (mainly quicker transportation). If it costs $500 more to fly, it's probably worth it. $1000, maybe. $2000? Not in my mind. YMMV

We were trying to decide the same thing this year. For us it all depended on cost of flights. If flights were too high we will have to drive, and coming from MA that's a long ride. We definately would have to extend our vacation for the 4 extra days of driving. But luckily flights weren't that bad so we are flying!!! :)
That doesn't mean we wouldn't drive if we had to. We have driven to S.C. in the past and portable DVD players are a lifesaver. The ride wasn't as bad as we thought.
So my advice is- FLY if the price is right, but don't worry too much about driving it sounds like you don't have too long of a ride anyway.

:thumbsup2 DH and I do not have children. We fly. We have driven but DH does not like to sit in a car for 9-10 hour trip. If you decide to fly I would see if the kids could earn half of their ticket money doing chores, mowing yards etc. Could the parents spring for 50% of ticket cost. I mean you are paying for everything else from the post I gather. This would be a great opportunity for them to help out. Set a goal for, say $150 to $200 each for the kids and hold them to it. They are old enough to learn that sometimes you have to work for what you want. Again this is from someone who does not have children. When I was 15 and wanted to go to Europe my Mom paid for the trip and I earned ALL my spending money. I worked hard for that $700 in 1985 and came back with about $20. :thumbsup2

I mean do you have to pay for the whole trip can't the kids participate? I would ask them if they want to fly and if they do--they would have to help me a little--just as a life lesson.

Thanks for the input. As long as prices don't go up a lot more between now and next June we will most likely fly. DH drives for a living and is always on the road. While the drive is certainly doable, I think he would rather have a break from the road. Also his sciatic nerve has been acting up the last few days and he's been petty miserable. Even he admitted that the extra cost of flying might be worth it for comfort sake. (although that could change when he's feeling better)

The idea of making the kids earn some of their airfare is a good idea. They are already used to having to earn their own money to things that they want. This trip is a little different though. The kids mom, my sister, died a few years ago after a year long illness. She always wanted to take them to disney but was never able to. This is our way of honoring her and giving the kids a trip that they will always remember. If we can swing it, I'd like to pay for it ourselves (with the exception of extra spending cash). We really want this to be a special trip for them.

You are a great aunt!! I hope they really appreciate what you are doing and why. If they don't now I'm sure they wiil when they are a little older. Have a truly MAGICAL trip! :)

Even at $1500, I'd vote for flying. 6 hrs is my max for driving anywhere. Beyond that, my time & sanity is more valuable than a couple hundred $.
When it comes to vacationing, cheapest isn't necessarily best.

Of course, my point was simply that the cost difference "worth" is different for everyone. I'm guessing if the flight was $1500, driving would run ~$500. So is flying "worth" $1000 more? To me, it would be, but I'd have to see where we were financially at the time. Is flying worth $2000 more to me? Probably not. Every family needs to decide where that "breaking point" is.

I have 3 kids and we drive from Michigan every year. I keep looking to see if I can justify flying but the cost difference is so huge that I can never justify it. To me the cost of a flight just digs into my vacation fund and robs me of more disney for next year, lol. Anyway, I don't know your financial situation so only you can judge this. If I had all kinds of disposable income I would fly but I don't so I won't :)

True. I've never been at my breaking pt for Orlando. When DCL 1st released Med cruises for this summer, I could have gotten the cruise fare very reasonable, equiv to a Caribbean cruise, but the airfare to Barcelona was at least $1100 pp. For my family that's $4400 just to get there. Add in excursions and it was all over $10k, beyond my breaking point. I wish I could stop traveling for long enough to save that much but it would be hard to go for so long with no trips coming up. :guilty:

We (wife, myself, 2 teens) have been doing Disney every other year for the past 22 years. Our last 6 trips we have driven. We will be driving from NH to Disney again this Summer. We think that the trip down is a chance to bond and we make an adventure out of it. I like the fact that we are not restricted by what we can pack. I figured several years ago that I save quite a bit of money when you figure the flight, rental car, money we save on food and drinks that we bring with us, ect... I usually leave at night so I get through all the big cities on the East Coast before rush hour the next morning.

This is handy!

Fly
Door-to-Door, each way 5 hours, 40 minutes
Total Cost $875.92
CO2 Impact: 5,256 lbs.

Drive
Door-to-Door, each way 1 day, 4 hours, 50 minutes
Total Cost $609.41
CO2 Impact: 1,863 lbs.
(Driving assumes 12 hrs/day of driving and $75 hotel room.)

Still spending a lot of time that could be spent at WDW/DCL (or vac time kept in the bank) just to save $267.
Of course we all have our own reasons for liking our own ways. It's good that we all have a choice. :thumbsup2

We're driving for the 1st time this year because of the air costs. We're leaving from Buffalo. It's supposed to take approx 19 hours & planning on leaving in the middle of the night. We have 3 kids 4, 10 & 13. I found this site online http://www.plan-a-magical-vacation.com/gas-mileage-calculator.html that helps calculate the cost of gas & mileage from point A to point B. It's supposed to end up costing us $400 RT in gas & that was guesstimating gas at a higher price. As opposed to the $2k to fly down. We've never paid more than $150-$170 round trip per person. This years flight prices are crazy high. So the extra $1600 we're gonna save is almost the cost of our meal plan for all of us. I've never driven that far before especially with 3 kids. It's gonna be interesting. I already invested into a 2 screen DVD player that ataches to the head rest of the front seats. Hopefully that keeps them busy if only for a couple hours. UGH!
