Just went to upload some pictures from my digital camera....when I put the USB cable in the camera to connect to the computer the place where you put the cable into on the camera broke off and fell into the camera!!! Can't even imagine how much a camera shop would charge to open up the camera and replace the USB connection piece.

So, I need to find a new digital camera ASAP....my baby is due in 4 days and now I have no camera!!!! I really need to be budget minded, so I am not looking to spend more than $250 on a camera.....but I want something of quality. I am looking at the Canon Power Shots and see a couple in the $185-$200 range......

Can anyone give me any recommendations?? Thanks so much!!!

Does your PC have a slot for the memory card ?
If it does then you don't need the USB connection.

If not, I bought a SONY 5.1 MP camera at Best Buy for my daughter around Christmas time for $139.00. It's an excellent camera and takes video as well.

Good luck with your baby !

I'm sorry your camera broke. I don't have any suggestions for new digital cameras, but I may have an idea how you could use yours until you have time to make the decision/purchase. Does your camera store the images on a memory card? If so then you can buy little USB connectors that actually hold your memory card and allow you to upload the pictures without your camera. I bought mine for $10.

Here is a link to an example of what I have

Good luck!

Do you put the memory card from your camera inside the gizmo you mentioned...and then plug the gizmo into the computer?? That might work as I do have a memory card that I am using to store the pictures.

My computer is about 4 years old, so I do not have a memory card slot on my PC.

I could take the memory card out of the camera and then run to Walgreens every time I want to download photos, but that really defeats the purpose of having a digital camera for us. We are constantly uploading pictures and email them to relatives. We will do this if need be until we purchase a new camera, but I was just hoping to simplify things now. Once the baby is here it is going to be crazy....and having to run to Walgreens every couple of days to have a disk made is not something I am looking forward to.

If anyone has any other camera recommendations I would love to hear them!! Thanks!

a card reader is a great way to get your pictures from a memory card onto the PC - very quick and easy! I use one all the time. :)

As far as a camera recommendation - I just bought a canon S3, but I believe that's a little out of your price range. It's around $300.

hey...

i just wanted to let you know that i have a canon powershot a410 and i absolutely love it.

i don't believe they have that model number anymore but they have teo A models which are made for entry level phototgraphy. i've always had really good photos.

with the right settings, i was even able to take nce spectro photos which we know is hard to do.

Yes, you take the memory card out of the camera and stick it inside the little "gizmo". Then you plug the "gizmo" into the USB drive and you can access the pictures. It's really easy! In fact, on my computer it works must faster than when my camera is plugged into the PC (I can download the pictures faster). Buying this for $10 would be much better than going to WalGreens and paying for them to put the images onto a CD.

Thanks for all the suggestions!

Unfortunately I just went to turn on the camera and see if all the functions still worked.....and it will not turn on. I think the dislodging of the USB piece caused other internal parts to fail......Ugh! I was liking the idea of the card reader for the time being too!!

Guess I will be shopping tomorrow to compare prices on a new camera. I have been doing a little research online and it seems as if the Cannon A630 is rated as one of the top point-and-shoot digitals....so I might look into that model.

My family has 3 Powershots and we all love them. I have an older one from a few years ago and it is still holding on. They aren't made like the film cameras but its doing ok. I forsee it dying in a few more years though :(

My brother had a sony before he got his powershot. The sony didn't last 2 years before it was done. We won't buy another.

I hear good things about Nikon. i don't know how their cameras hold up "long" term. I know they run a bit more than Canon's.

I have a few friends with Kodak's and I'm not sure if its the individual camera, the megapixels, or what the deal is but the pictures are always out of focus or fuzzy.

I got my dad's powershot at Circuit City around christmas for $130. It was a 6 megapixel. Good luck

LOVE the Powershot!

Four of my friends also have a Powershot - we all have different versions, but we ALL love them. They take great pics and they are little.

I always take my photo card to Sam's Club and upload and print from there.

I bought a canon a 530 for my daughter for christmas and we already have an E18 error, they want 98.00 to fix it. Watch out for this camara. I will buy a new one.

I have heard about this error....seems to be a major issue with the lens retracting. I bought the A630 this morning and will see how I like it over the weekend. I paid $200, so I am not sure if I should warranty it for an extra 4 years for $60......I only have 14 days to exchange.....

I bought the Canon A620(7 mega pixels) last year to have for the birth of my DD. I love it! I have never had any problems with it and have taken almost 3000 pictures. The picture quality is fantastic and it is super fast with capturing that special moment.

Congratulations on your little one!

Good luck with your camera AND the baby!!!

I have a Canon A710 IS and I love it! I just have to figure out how to get better night time shots.

Hey, if you haven't bought one yet... make sure that the camera, whichever one you buy, doesn't have a shutter lag. Meaning... you want it to snap the picture as soon as you press the button. My Kodak is great about this, my Nikon missed many good picture opportunities because by the time it actually snapped the pic... my new baby had turned her head, or crawled out of the way.

www.steves-digicams.com is a GREAT review site and will tell you if your shutter lag is good or bad.
