I have been using an older Kodak digital...no optical zoom, bad flash results. So.....I need to get into something better. I'm not all that versed in digital photography. I don't 'do' exposures, apertures, and that sort of thing, as of yet anyway. What I want is some optical zoom capabilities, decent flash, and really easy..oh, and under $300. I know how a lot of you feel about Kodak, so I'm sure I won't get any advice about buying one of theirs. But, any insights for a true novice?? I just don't want to spend $300 and find that I've made a huge mistake. I don't print my own photos. I've been downloading them into my Kodak Easyshare program and sending them to Kodak to print what I need. And only vacation shots, family birthdays, that kind of thing...nothing extensive. Thanks a lot.

Kodak makes fine cameras, as do many other companies. Just depends on what you want.

I know a good number of folks here, me included, have purchased the Canon 2S IS in recent months, and I do think everyone seems satisfied. There is a newer model, the S3, due out in a few months, so the S2 is coming down in price, getting cloe to $300. I paid mid $400 about 4 months ago. I think this site has had good reviews here, http://www2.butterflyphoto.com/shop/product.aspx?ref=cnet&sku=S2IS great price. The camera can be simple, point and shoot, or more advanced, if you want to use the features. A good choice I think, Diane.

Thanks Dan...I'll look into that one. Never had a Canon before.

And I strongly suggest "Digital Photography Jumpstart Guide DVD" I just received from eBay yesterday. It teaches beginners a LOT about photography (and cheap too).

Once you're through with that DVD, then go buy Understanding Exposure book. But I personally don't think that book is for beginners.
