Does anyone else think that WDW needs these. I have been fighting skin cancer for the last 3 years and will not give up WDW. I have covered myself well but am wondering about the young children. More awnings over the Main Street in the MK, more shade at Epcot and at all bus waiting areas should be a priority. I love WDW but worry about the kids and those of us who do have skin cancer. :surfweb:

have very white skin - so definitely understand - but compared to the other theme parks - Disney does a good job.

Sunscreen was invented for people like me and sounds like you. Some of my relatives until they had a problem refused to even consider sun screen - say they did not need it. They found out later in their life that they do.

You can't protect those who want a sun tan. There will always be some who think it is health - not realizing that they will have problems later in life.

So for you wear a hat - get the clothes that protect you from the sun - take an umbrella and USE IT. and take sun screen - have always put more on every 2 hours - in the summer time in Florida - every hour. Yes it takes time out of parks - but your skin needs it.

so sun screen and HAT are a must. the hat needs to cover your face, ears and neck. Sun screen is not good for eyes - so putting in on your forehead you could easily burn your eyes. So you need both sunscreen and hat.

also don't go out between 11am and 2pm (this become 10am and 5pm in the summer) - go to the mall, read - just stay inside.

when I was little have pictures of me on the beach - in long shelves and pants and still got burned.

sorry for your health problems - and hope you are better.

go visit US/IOA or SW - now SW has improved - but some places in both have no shade.

remember that Disney at night is just as special as Disney during the day and safer for those with fair skin or sun cancer.

just don't plan on during the 3pm parade at any of the parks.

Good advice on wide brim hat and sunscreen. And now they have technical fabrics that are UV protective.

Respectfully, there needs to be some personal (or parental) responsibility involved in protecting people from sun exposure.

Most bus areas do have cover. The only ones I can think of that don't are the All Stars at the resorts themselves. All park bus stops have some cover.

I don't think they need awnings on Main Street. If you want to be out of the sun, go inside the stores. :confused3 Expecting a theme park to have a ton of shade is kind of silly. Are you really there to stand around in shady spots? Most of the queues are already covered too. And this is coming from someone who is extremely fair skinned. I make sure I use a good sunblock, and reapply it every 2 hours. I don't think anything else needs to be provided.

I was diagnosed with melanoma 1 day before heading to a planned vacation to WDW 5 years ago - I was devastated and like you, worried about not only being exposed to sun while on my vacation but even more concerned for my very pale daughter.

I actually found it very doable! First of all, we never travel to Florida in the summer when the UV rays are strongest. We generally go in the winter months - realizing that they are still there, but at least not peaked!

We started out in the room with the thick lotion type, but carried the spray on stuff for the parks and reapplied every two hours - if we were sweaty, we did it every hour - I found this to be easiest and most convenient and it worked perfectly (we came home white as could be lol)

I also found that I could walk on one side of the "street" where there was shade from buildings to help - plus we were in and out of indoor attractions so often, I really didn't find it to be much of an issue.

The boats have indoor seating and the bus stops I have been at all were shade covered as well.

I agree. I think that WDW is actually pretty good about having shaded spots. Much better than our local Six Flags, for sure.

Absolutely NOT... They do a great job as is... Protecting yourself from sun damage is a personal responsibility and asking Disney to do this is silly in my opinion.

I too have to watch my exposure because I have had a history of it as well. Lucky for me mine have not been cancer. However it runs in my family and I did some pretty good damage in my youth.

Having been at Disney World in January with the temps in the 40s, I ran to areas that were in the sun. And I've been there when it's been colder as well.

OP, I feel for you and your condition but there are many more guests who don't have that concern and want the Florida sun. Sure, there are days in the summer when I am wanted and needing shade but I make do with shops or a rest or whatever.

You might want to have a talk with your doctor on what you can do because it's just not at Disney World. The sun seems to shine all around the world.

Yes at AK (WHY is that park so hot?) but it's fine everywhere else.

It is so hot because of the extra humidity of maintaining the plant life. :)

I have to wear a good brimmed hat and shades because of fair skin and migraines. So I understand you wanting to stay out of the sun but I think that wdw does a great job providing shady/cooler areas. Lol, you should try kings island!
