Need more info about Key West!

If Sloppy Joe's sucks, where are the best sloppy joes' ?

It's a bar with food. I've never eaten their sandwich and really have no desire to, but the bar is actually named after a bar in Havana, which was a bar that also sold iced seafood. The floor was always a mess, so the patrons gave the owner, Joe, a hard time. Hemingway kept bugging the owner of the Key West establishmen to change the name from The Silver Slipper to Sloppy Joe's, so he did. It was actually originally called The Blind Pig and was located where Captain Tony's is today.

When I'm on the rock I want to eat Key West food. Conch fritters. Conch salad. Conch chowder. Cuban food (El Siboney is the best on the rock). Grilled or fried dolphin or grouper.

FWIW, you're the first person I've ever even heard mention sloppy joes at Sloppy Joe's. Not even people I know who spend months at a time there, or friends who live in Key West. I can't help but think it's not worth the time, but if you do go there and eat them, let me know how it was because I *love* sloppy joes.

I've seen pictures

Lol I've seen pictures of Sloppy Joes' from Sloppy Joe's and I thought they looked delicious. I usually love it so I thought that it must be THE place to eat good ones. I'm not that interest in drinking there (Beer and wine place you named seems much more interesting to me)... All I want is the sandwich. :rotfl2:

I don't eat sea food nor fish. :crazy2: I've found a small bbq place that looks good. Forgot the name.

Not sure if I should just go to Blue Heaven for the pie or get the whole meal there.

Whaaaaat? People eat dolphins??? :faint:

Duval Street during the day is usually fine, one caveat, if it's the week of Fantasy Fest all bets are off

Mahi mahi and dorado aren't dolphin. It's *dolphinfish* that you're getting if those are alternate names for it. Almost certainly not dolphin.

(had the same freakout in HS when my mom was making macadamia-crusted mahi mahi again and while shopping for it I saw the tag in the case that said dolphinfish...did much research...NOT dolphin)

And when you ask for Mahi Mahi or Dorado you'll look like a tourist in the Keys. ;)

If you can get into Blue Heaven in a reasonable amount of time then eat all the things. Their food is legendary for a reason.

There's no good BBQ on the rock. At least not last time I was there. The one next to Green Parrot, Charlie Mac's, is OK. It's owned by Pat Croce, the same guy who owns Rum Barrel, Island Dogs and the Green Parrot. I liked it much better when it was Babalu's. Their New Haven pizza was amazing.

If you want exceptional food and don't mind eating it from a trailer/food truck (though they also have a sit down area), go to Garbo's Grill at 409 Caroline. You can't go wrong. It's consistently listed as one of the top food trucks in the United States and one of the top places to eat in the country. I've not been to the new static location, but all my friends go nuts for it.

I did not know they made key lime wine. Do they only sell it in bottles or do they sell it by the glass as well?

When we were there they had free tasting samples. They have other fruit wines too. We got a bottle and brought it on board to have the last evening. Periodically I have my brother who lives in FL get some for me I liked it so much.
