One of my dearest friends has been in declining health for quite some time and about 6 months ago was told he NEEDS a liver transplant ASAP. He is so young(33) and has a wife and young daughter. They had started all the testing and getting things in order for the transplant list when it came to a screeching halt. Hopkins informed them that their insurance does not cover enough and then denied them because of this. They were able to get into UVA and were told there were no worries. Everything would be fine there. Today, while meeting with the Dr.s and a case worker they were told that their insurance will only cover so much and that his post op testing and follow ups would greatly exceed the coverage. They may again be denied transplant surgery because of this!

His wife is quite the fighter, but she is being blocked at every turn. They have been told that disability could take 2 years, medicaid/medicare from our state won't be accepted at either hospital. She was even told by a social worker that she may want to consider legally seperating...this might help with the financial aspect, but then again it might not.

I am absolutely heartbroken and sick for them. The thought of him dying because of their insurance disgusts me. I just honestly don't even know what to feel at this point. I have watched this man that I have known forever deteriorate and become so weak and scared and I feel absolutely helpless.
Please keep this family in your thoughts and prayers and pray that a solution arises very soon.

How terribly sad. I can´t believe that some people actually defend a health care system that would allow people to die because they don´t have the right kind of insurance. Sending my best wishes for a speedy solution and recovery.

Wow, that just sickens me. I will keep this family in my thoughts and I really hope that something comes through for them.

What I don't understand is, even if insurance won't cover it, won't they let the family go into debt or try to come up with a loan for the remainder?

Very, very sad situation. The small hospital I work for is in the referral pattern for Hopkins. We try to send critically ill patients in need of complicated cardiac surgery or heart transplantation to Hopkins. I have seen them deny patients over and over again because of insurance. Doesn't matter if the surgeon accepted them. Hopkins is a steel door and you need to have the right key. Sadly, I am not convinced that national health coverage will fix this problem.

I really hope that you friend will be able to find an institution that will handle his care and liver transplantation. It is a very sad situation and my heart goes out to the family and friends like you.
