Any info would be great. Esp. schools (DS7), rentals, good areas. I am considering this area to move to. I'm a single mom of a seven year old looking to relocate. I own a gift shop now, but also have a medical assisting degree. How is medical field or retail in those areas? How are the schools in the area? I know the coast is always more expensive, I would love to be on the beach or very close. Thanks!
I do know that rental inventory for a home is low in Indialantic. We has to rent our home very very quickly as our renter bailed on us and I wanted a signed lease before I left. I had less than a week. The people that we did rent to..one of the references was a landlord who was also a realtor and according to my husband...she kind of lectures him on what we rented our home for. It seems rentals should be $1500 or higher to give you an idea. I think Apartments are less, but not too many beachside.
There are some on Eau Gallie. One was converted to condominiums before the bubble burst. The other is called Brittany Apartments.
Students that live beachside but south of Eau Gallie to a few streets Sotho of 5th Avenue aka 192 would attend Indialantic Elementary, Hoover Middle (adjacent to Indialantic) and I *think* Melbourne High School on Babcock on the mainland.
North of Eau Gallie is Indian Harbour and that leads into Satellite Beach. Both share a zip code. I am not sure on the rental inventory. The students would attend Ocean Breeze Elementary, Delaura Middle and Satellite High School.
I have friends with children in every single one of those schools and for the most part, all are pleased with the quality of education.
South of 5th avenue, once you get into the town of Melbourne Beach (I don't recall the exact street that occurs) and head south. Those kids attend Gemini Elementary, but I believe they are zoned for Hoover and Mel High. Not positive about Hoover though.
It is a great loVe to raise a family. Big Surfing/boating/coastal lifestyle area.
If you are planning on living beachside...I would not buy until after the layoffs at KSC are complete. Only because most locals feel the hosuinf market will slide more when that occurs and while locals in Sat Bch/Indialantic wouldn't necessarily work at the cape--they may work for one of the many contractors such as USA (United Space Alliance) or any number of businesses that service that community. JMO. Home prices are pretty good though for buyers.
Medical--lots of work in that. Holmes is pretty big as is Wuestoff. We are a snowbird area, so medical needs of an elder population will still have employment. I have only heard of dentisty and optical taking a hit from the economy since people will cut that from their budgets first. (my dentist went to seeing patients only 3 days a week and a spouse of my husbands co-worker was an opthomologist and lost her job as the practice was moslty for elective procedures for the eye.
Contrast that to my OB. He was a solo lractice and just after I had my daughter, he lured an OB from another practice to join him. That practice just finished a construction job that doubled the size of their facility. Clealry people are still having babies.
Other medical areas that are non-elective are probably doing well as well. (I.e. Cosmetic survey.). I had a biopsy at a dermatology office before I left and they had many patients there.
Some neighborhoods will have a higher concentration of kids than others.
I have always likes Melbourne Beach and Indian Harbour Beach. I coveted those areas and hoped to move to either of those one day. Indian Harbour is nice because depending on where you end up, a public swimming pool, library, public tennis courts, and beach access are all within walking/bike riding distance.
In Satellite Beach, I liked he Desoto Parkway Area. At Christmas, Verbenia Court off of the eastern end of Desoto has an awesome Christmas light display. Also--most homes are within at least a bike ride of the library. Same library used by IHB. You just get to it from the North Entrance.
My favorite beach for kids is Futch Park at Paradise Beach. Cool playground and it has bathrooms and outdoor shower.
There is one in Satellite that was recently remodeled. It is acroos from Walgreems, but I don't remember the name. It too has a playground and facilities.
Shopping...I miss my B1G1 frees from Publix for gocery shopping. Melborne Square Mall is a small mall, but very very decent. They have Dillards, Macy's and Jc Penney.
Oddly--Sears is a stand Alone store in it's own little world on Babcock near Mel High.
For more "big city" (Orlando haha) type stores like Old Navy, Kohl's...the Avenue at Viera is where to go. I usually took Eau Gallie to I-95 to Wickham. That was the quickest. When the Pineda exit opens on I-95..then you can also take Pineda to 95 to Wickham from Sat Bch. I got ther in 20-30 minutes. For that area..not bad.
For more specialty shopping and wider variety...Florida Mall or Mall at Millenia in orlando is where to head. Most anything in Orlando is within 1h30m of the beach. Not bad for a special trip.
Okay...any other questions.
