Need ideas for in-room breakfasts

My kids & I will be staying onsite for 18 nites this July, and I need to try to keep the food spending under control. We're flying and won't have a rental car, so I won't be able to go shopping once we're there, other than a 30 min. grocery stop on the way from the airport. Thought I'd pick up bottled water and a styrofoam cooler and some milk, juice boxes and soda at that time (heavy/hard to pack stuff).

I want to pack one suitcase full of stuff that we can have in our room for breakfast everyday. I want to avoid sweet/junky food as much as possible. Any suggestions for portable, semi-healthy breakfast foods and snack foods?

Also, once we run out of our initial supply of milk, are there "general stores" or the like at the different resorts to buy milk other than in the little single-serving cartons?

Thanks for your help!

Sue

you know - a peanut butter sandwhich makes a great, easy breakfast. got the protein of the PB (which you can pack) and the carbs of the bread...won't spike the kids' bloodsugar mid-morning making them cranky/hungry again.

also nutragrain bars or muffin bars are easy to pack and make a decent breakfast. (just avoid the poptarts! heheh)

fruit is also good for breakfast - apple with PB...I think apples are the easiest fruit to pack.

I'm almost positive that you can buy milk at any of the gift shops at the resorts (they have coolers with liquor in them - almost positive they will have milk as well.)

where are are you staying by chance?

We just returned last week and we tried to eat b-fast in our room every morning. We stopped at the grocery store and picked up many different items. Our kids enjoyed Bananas, nutra grain bars, granola bars, yogurt, pop tarts and cereal. My husband and I even bought some cans of slim fast for when we were in a hurry. It worked out very well for us and we were very glad that we did this as it saved us a lot of $. I dont know about resorts selling milk or anything. Never had to buy it there.

I read this idea somewhere a while back and I thought it was brilliant...If you are staying at a resort that has in-room coffee makers, or if you can request one, you can run it through w/o coffee just to boil water and use that to make those packets of instant oatmeal.

Hope this helps!

I usually bake a couple dozen homemade muffins. We buy various granola, trail mix, cereal, etc., bars and Little Debbie honebuys, pecan twirls, etc. I also take some small containers of fruit and several variety packs of cereal. Just look in the cereal section at the grocery store -- you'll be amazed at all the stuff they have. We usually don't even stop at the grocery store -- I just buy milk at the resort shop.

I start shopping for our breakfast/snack stuff a few weeks before the trip so I can take advantage of sales and coupons.

Love the oatmeal idea!!!!

I bought cereal, honeybuns, nutrigrain bars........yogurt!! Going to also take the PB & J. We are going to ask for a fridge too. We are driving down and will have a cooler with us. My DH always thinks I am crazy because I pack so much food.........but he enjoys a late night snack!

If you are willing to think outside of the regular breakfast fare box, you can increase your options some. Some of the items (other than those already mentioned) we bring include: dried fruit, beef or turkey jerky, homemade granola bars (I have a recipe that makes a 9 x 13 pan, and then they can be cut into bars and packed in ziploc bags), nuts, crackers and squirt cheese or individual packs of cheese/crackers or pretzels/crackers. We bring juice boxes (and you can get chocolate milk that way too!, but that might be too sugary for you) as they don't need refrigeration.

As far as milk goes, every place we have ever stayed (WL, BCV, AKL, OKW, CBR) except for the Swan (and then we hopped to the Dolphin) has milk available. All of the resorts have a small selection of food items in their gift shops, and that selection is increased in the Home Away From Home resorts. It isn't cheap, but probably would be cheaper than eating out.

18 days at WDW...I am green with envy! Have a great trip!

with the added above, we have always taken a really cheap toaster with us, ya know for under 10 bucks, to have toasted cheese sandwhichs and just toast w pb...at night if ya just want a snack. when we leave we just leave the toaster!

Gosh, I knew you guys would come thru for me! :)

I love the coffeemaker/hot water/instant oatmeal and the toaster ideas! We're staying at POR, YC, CR, and AKL-concierge--will all of these places have the coffee makers in the room or available by request?

Keep those ideas coming!!!

On a related note, the airport transportation company we're using, Murray Hill, has those electric coolers available to their customers to rent for something like $45 for the duration of your stay, which I think is a good bargain since we'll be there 18 nites. Do you think this would be better than buying a styrofoam cooler and keeping it full of ice? My concern is that we will be switching resorts 3 times and will have to rely on bell services to transfer our luggage. I wonder if the cooler would be a problem?

get the cooler! I've seen those styrofoam things just disintegrate on people! don't worry about transporting it - that's bell services issue - just tip well!

And once you hit AKL concierge - you've got breakfast in the lounge! (oatmeal/cereal/bagels/danish/muffins/fruit/juice/smoothie/coffee/tea/hot chocolate) LOVE the AKL concierge offerings!

all the places you are staying will have the coffee makers available on request. When you check it - poke around the room (check the closet) if you don't see it - call mousekeeping and they'll bring one up to you. :)

by the way
Just so you know - all the concierge rooms at AKL I believe have mini-fridges already in the room at no extra charge.

Why not ship a box with cereal, bfast bars, granola, trail mix, etc before you leave? Shipping won't be bad on these items, and it allows you to preplan a bit. Better to have more than you need on hand than not enough.

Blessings,

Not all AKL concierge rooms have a fridge. The first time we stayed there, no fridge in the room.

We also buy a cheap toaster and I like to bring my George Foreman grill ( the little one) we like turkey bacon sandwiches for breakfast. Also comes in handy for grilled ham and cheese for lunch or dinner. The coffee pot can be used to heat up soups and canned stews and such.

A little creativity can stretch the budget. One year when we traveled with friends to POFQ, we bought a $40.00 microwave and we had some nice meals. We offered it to the housekeeper at the end our stay and she was thrilled.

Bagels travel well - and you can warm them up/toast them in the food court toasters.

We bring breakfast as well - cereal (don't forget bowls and spoons!) bagels, granola bars, raisins, peanut butter, juice boxes, and a loaf of bread.

I second mic_key_mouse's suggestion. Before we went to the Poly last October, I packed a box with breakfast and snack food items and UPS'ed it to the resort. It was waiting for us when we arrived and I didn't have to deal with carrying extra stuff on the plane.

Have fun!

I agree with the coffee pot oatmeal. I did that all the time in college. I'm not sure on the nutritional value, but my husband and I love those milk n' cereal bars. I'd stay away from pop tarts though, they are mucho calories.

Peanut butter bread makes a great breakfast and stabilizes blood sugar.

I don't, but my husband also enjoys Tang with breakfast.
