Need ideas for B-day at Chef mickey's?

We are taking our DS for his 6th B-day. It will be the saturday night of Thanskgiving weekend, so I am hoping that things won't get so crowded/crazy that we won't have fun.

I am planning to bring his presents wrapped (3 or 4). Some of my family might be joining us (I have to give them the 120 day out deadline to let me know). Should we order a cake ahead of time? Who do I order it from and how soon would I need to do it?
Do they do anything special ? If I wanted a few balloons where could I order them from or would balloons be too much? Opinons please!

Oh my goodness, what a coincidence!

I live in Florida (Merritt Island) and will be taking my son to Disney for his 6th birthday also! We are staying at the Contemporary in the tower on Friday May 30th and Saturday May 31st, and then heading back home (50 miles) on the night of June 1st.

I have been reading the boards and looking all over for things to do that are special. So far, I know about getting the "birthday button" from City Hall, and letting the front desk know about his birthday for a morning wake-up call.

We have friends that will meet us at our hotel Saturday morning for Chef Mickey's breakfast at 8:00am. There is no "early entry" for the Magic Kingdom that day. Those friends will be with us for a birthday party at the Crystal Palace at 5:30pm, and there will be 11 of us there. We have some other friends that will be joining us for that also. I am basically one small-sized gift, and asking the others to do the same. I am getting him an analog watch, which is functional and easy to carry. He doesn't need gifts! He is at Disney World! I suggested to one family to get one of those small radio controlled cars that are hot wheels sized. Again, small and basically a token present.

You can get a generic cake at Crystal Palace for $9.99. I understand that you can call ahead and order one with the name on it though. I will probably do that.

Also, we are lucky that Friday night, May 30th (his actual birthday), is an E-ride night so we can stay longer in the park!

This is my only dilemma: His ACTUAL birthday is Friday, but we are celebrating it on Saturday. WHICH DAY should I get the birthday button for him?

We celebrated my DS's 7th birthday at Chef Mickey's. We did buy the birthday pin at MK so he was wearing that. They brought him a cupcake with a lit candle and everyone was twirling their napkins and singing Happy Birthday. The characters all gave him hugs. We also had our picture taken (10 of us) before we were seated for dinner, DS in front with the birthday pin showing!

So we didn't get a cake, because we knew he would get the cupcake and Chef Mickey's has a great sundae bar to make your own sundaes.

We had given him his gifts that morning when we woke up (I think there is a special Mickey birthday wake up call, too!), so we souldn't have to tote them along to the restaurant!

After dinner, we hoofed it over to Epcot to watch Illuminations!

We celebrated our friends son's birthday at Chef Mickeys and we ordered the cake ahead of time as a surprise. Just wanted to add, the cake itself was delicious! Not overly sweet- we ordered yellow cake with chocolate filling!

Ordering a cake from the contemporary. I would not suggest it. My mom ordered our cake from the california grill chefs, and it was the most disgusting thing I have tasted dessert wise. Yuck! It was not worth the over 200$ she spent on it. I would just let them bring the cupcake, and have everyone in the party decorate their own. They have a very nice area for that, and all the little desserts are very good at Chef Mickey's as well.

Oh no! I have one reply that the cake was delicious, one that it's disgustign . Any other opinions? Does EVERYONE get a cupcake? Would his have a candle at least?

Chef Mickeys is a buffet, and they have a very large dessert section. Part of the section has a decorate your own cupcake part, so everyone could have a cupcake if they wanted one, but only the birthday boy's would be delivered to him and it would include a candle. We had our cake from Cali Grill, so Maybe the cakes at chef mickeys are different, Plus we had ours in sept of 01, so maybe a chef has changed since then. It was just very disappointing for the cake to be that expensive, and that unedible. I really hope something has changed and the cakes have gotten better. Either way I am sure he will enjoy whatever you pick.

We celebrated my DS 2nd birthday and it was great. We ordered the cake and it was excellent. We ordered a yellow cake with fudge frosting. It was beautiful and delicious and was less then $40.00. It came with a big Mickey candle and had his name on it. However, the cup cakes are a great idea as well. We did the decorate your own cupcake on a different visit and he loved that. I think either one will do great. I bought Mickey parts hats at a party store for all of the guests (13).
