...with a Mexican theme.

A good friend of mine is getting married May 2005. We are planning her shower for March and want to get a head start on it before the holidays hit.

My friend and her then-husband will be going to Mexico for their honeymoon, so we thought we would carry that into the theme.

Any ideas for food (buffet style)? Favors?

Also, how do you properly put on the invitation that they would prefer money towards their honeymoon rather than shower gifts?

Any help is truly appreciated!

TIA!

Rule #1 - never polite to 'ask' or 'suggest' money.
if she isn't registered...she might get more money then gifts by default.

for the theme:
margaritas (for sure!)/sangria
food:
nachos
bean dip
build your own: tacos (soft and crunchy)
fajitas

just do a search for 'mexican foods' and i'm sure you'll come up with some great 'finger food' type foods...and great mexican desserts

I'm not big on 'bridal shower games'...in fact I down right hate them and REFUSED to have any at my own shower...but if you're going all out for a mexican theme - I think a pinata would be really cute...and a chance for some people to just get silly.

thanks for the advice....I definitely like the Margarita idea. Maybe I'll get one of those frozen drink machines......ohhhhhh yeahhhhh

ITA on both those counts! :D
Plus with a pinata theres no pressure to participate if guests dont want to.

quesadillas are great and very easy to make!! did i just rhyme?

i have a great recipe for chicken and mushroom quesadillas that are very easy to make before hand, let me know if you want the recipe!

I'll definitely take it!!! THANKS!

oops - missed one of your questions.
I always like favors I can "snack on " on the way home. heheh

I'd do a chocolate type favor...I know *I* like chocolate after a spicy mexican meal! just get mini gift bags at a party store and fill with Lindt truffles or Ghiradellie squares or plain old hershey kisses!

(oh - mexican rice too! VERY easy to make! I belive Goya makes a good one - in the 'international foods' aisle at most grocery stores)

keep 'em coming!! Thanks sooooo much!!!

(and I like chocolate ANYTIME!!!)

Have you even tried taquitos. They are made by Jose Ole' I think and are found in the freezer section. Yummy with sour cream and salsa. They also make mini tacos and mini quesadillas.

just a gentle reminder, that showers are traditionally a gift giving event, not a money maker. I think you will be very disappointed (or maybe I should say the couple will be), if they expect people to give money.

"Traditionally, the bridal shower was an opportunity for a bride to celebrate with her female family and friends, and for them to give her all the personal and useful items she would need as she left her family home and started out as a young wife."

I have to agree about the money part. I would consider it very rude if I received an invitation requesting money.

As for the food. I have a recipe for salsa that is great. I never go to a mexican restaurant with this chunky type salsa so it would be something different for your party.

Take a large can of hunts whole peeled tomatos,
Put them in a bowl and squeeze them to break them apart.
Cut up one large onion in chunky pieces and add it to the tomatos.
Add 4 pieces of chopped garlic.
Add 4 chopped jalepeno peppers
Add garlic salt and pepper to taste.

Serve with bite size Tostitos!

That's it. People love this stuff when I make it. You may want to try it out before hand to make sure it is something that you like.

I must agree with the other posters that a bridal shower is in no way a money giving event. She should either register somewhere she likes or she may end up with 8 blenders.

I think I may have stated the whole money thing wrong.

I've been to several bridal showers where it is stated that the couple is registered at "such & such" travel agency. So then it's the guests' option to pursue that further.

Maybe I'll call the travel agency & see if they have a little registry card or something I can put with the invitation.

Thanks for the suggestions & recipies....I really appreciate it!
