Need hotels in NYC & DC- on a budget

Thanks for all of your suggestions and hints! We haven't decided what we are going to do, but all this helps. I'm hoping we make a decision soon as I know the longer we wait, the more likely the rates are to climb! Especially for July!

Thanks again - and if anyone has more thoughts to share, please do!

Check Hotwire. I have gotten fantastic deals thru Hotwire for these cities... including the Hotel George in DC for $75 a night in July. I use the Hotwire site in conjunction with betterbidding.com, which helps identify hotwire hotels based on location, amenities, etc. What I love about Hotwire is you can specify the number of travelers (Priceline only guarantees bedding for two), and try to determine what the hotel name might be before committing to the purchase.

The Courtyard in Crystal City is about $110 a night and has a shuttle to a metro stop. THere are a few dinning options within steps of the hotel

I would not leave anything of value in your vehicle. That sounds like an invitation to a theft. If you can only do one city, I would go to NY. Lots of museums, etc.

oh shoot - is July peak season in Washington DC?

I'm so naive - I thought since it would be hot/ humid, Congress would be out, no school groups it wouldn't be crowded.

Tell me - is there any warm weather timeframe that is good to go to Washington?

Thanks!

Just found a GREAT deal on a NYC hotel for Friday, May 3rd. I signed up at Backbid.com, put in requests for a hotel in several areas: Manhattan-Times Square, Manhattan-Midtown East & Manhattan-Midtown West. I put in for a rate of $175/nite. Within minutes, I received a bid from St.Giles-The Court hotel, 3 blocks from Grand Central Station for $84, $93 with taxes!!! According to tripadvisor.com, this has a 4 star rating(I did request 3 stars and up on my requests) and there were numerous, recent positive reviews. Oh, and this includes a free continental breakfast!

I figure for one night it was more than worth committing to this non-refundable rate. I imagine the closer to your date, the better chance for snagging a decent rate. I did receive an actual confirmation# from the hotel, which I have to bring with me when checking in.

This is a nice hotel. It used to be a W until a few years ago. I live 2 blocks from there and my parents stay there when they visit. I have only been in the suites but they are spacious (way bigger than our 1 bedroom apartment) and although you can tell it's older, everything is quite clean. What I mean is that the bathrooms are very clean, philosophy bath products, etc. but you can tell that the sink or toilet is an older model. The downstairs was renovated but still has that "W" hotel look - kind of weird trendy. There is a new hotel adjacent called the Tuscany that is very nice. In the area, there is a great bagel express right by the hotel and then another bagel shop called Daniels on third avenue and 38th that is great, too. There is a starbucks caddy corner to the hotel. Nearby, in one of the affinia hotels around 37 and lex, there is a burger place called Rare that is excellent. You got a great deal - my parents usually get a special rate and that is around 175.

I live just outside of Albany. You should look into Mega Bus. You can depart from Albany (multiple locations), leave your car, and be dropped off at Penn. depending on your dates/times you could pay as little as $6 one way.
