We'd like to take a 5-7 day trip to DC next spring, and need a hotel recommendation. We are looking to spend no more than $100 a night, so center city is probably not happening. But if someone could recommend a good hotel thats near a metro stop, that would be great. Thanks!

Embassy Suites in Alexandria, VA. It is right across the street from the Metro, nice hotel, FREE HOT BREAKFAST and social hour in the evening with heavy appetizers that can be enough for a meal. The room itself is going to be more than $100/night but food in DC is VERY EXPENSIVE and 2 meals/day will save you a bundle.

The nice thing about Alexandria is having access by free trolley to Old Town, being able to wander around there in the evenings, etc.

We stayed at teh Embassy Suites Downtown DC. Around $190 a night, a 4 block walk to the metro. We really liked the morning breakfast and evening snack, and our room was spacious enough for the 6 of us.

I can't imagine finding a place for less than $100 a night anywhere you would want to stay. We stay in College Park, MD on the Metro for events at University of Maryland and it is usually at least $150 per night there for Quality Inn or Comfort Inn.

Although we haven't been to DC for that many days in a row, we had good luck finding good prices on decent hotels there on Hotwire. You can't pick the hotel, but you can pick a "zone" and get in a general area that you want. We got a 4 star Hilton, near the White House, for about $100 a night. This was over a weekend.

Last summer we won two rooms at the Marriott Metro Center on Priceline for less than $100 per room. (Can't remember the exact price right now due to stress and sleep deprivation:)) It was very nice and in the center of everything.

We stay here every trip to DC as well. The Metro makes it so easy and there are restaurants in the area that are kid frinedly if needed.....

Honestly, even if you happened to find a hotel for under $100 a night, once you factor in parking, the likely-hood of finding a hotel that cheap is small. DC hotels can be just as pricey as NYC hotels.

By "spring" do you by any chance mean Spring Break? Just FYI, that is one of the most expensive times of year to visit, because of the cherry blossoms, and because it is a hugely popular destination for families. Lots of conventions at that time. too.

Fall actually seems to be one of the most affordable times to visit DC, especially once Congress adjourns in about the second week in October.

I think it will be very hard to find a safe, clean hotel in your price range and the dates you are traveling...That said, we've stayed here several times, it was reasonably priced (I'm guessing because of the time of year) and we loved it. Close to a metro stop, too (about a block away). Also, if you "like" the hotel's page on Facebook or sign up for their email mailing list, they often post special rates.

Hope you have a nice trip. :)

I don't know about finding a place anywhere nice for under $100 but I have stayed in the Tyson's Corners area for about $130-$150. It is a short drive or taxi ride to the Metro from that area (Orange Line) and that is a bit key to saving money in DC. If you find a cheaper hotel but have to drive into DC because the metro is no where near or you are at a stop that is not safe you will quickly end up paying much more to park then you would have spending a little more to stay in an area where you could ride the metro safely any time of the night.

I used to live in the DC Area (McLean, VA) and your best bet is to get a hotel in Crystal City and just take the Metro into DC proper-Tysons Corner is further out and the traffic in that area is herrendous to say the least.

You may also be able to find some deals for Marriott on their website. We usually stay either at the Marriott Metro Center or JW Marriott when they have weekend specials. We went in the summer and got Hotel Washington for a reasonable price but it was through connections.

I've never really stayed at any of the hotels/motels on the Maryland side but I'm sure you can find some deals in Chevy Chase or Silver Spring which are both on the metro line.

Have a great time - I love DC at most times of the year with maybe the exception of late July & August :rotfl:

We stayed here this past May. The hotel was great, and the location was great. Breakfast was hot and tons of food. Evening snack however, was pretzels and popcorn when we were there LOL.

I'm happy that people seem to like Embassy Suites in Alexandria. I have two rooms reserved for April. I'm traveling with elderly parents, my sister, dh and kids. Since my parents can't do late nights the pool sounds nice and so does the free old town trolley. I really wanted a hotel in close walking distance to the metro and the free breakfast is a plus. Also since my sister is sharing with my parents I think she will appreciate the seperate area for the sofa bed.

I think I read there is a whole foods nearby which we may go to one or two nights. I also read there is a Subway nearby which will be ideal for my parents especially to bring food back to the room. Is there a drugstore like CVS or Walgreens nearby just in case we forget something or need meds?

Thats good news to know! Our kids go on fall break around the 15th of October and we have been thinking of going in 2011. We did a spring break 2009 trip-never again :scared1: It was our 1st time ever in a big city using metro transpo :rolleyes1

Whatever you do - AVOID AVOID AVOID the Doubletree Suites near the White House. We booked a room and had to cancel and even after speaking to the manager who told us he was releasing our room back into inventory they went back and charged us for the rooms 5 days later. We never did get it resolved with our credit card company even though the manager kept claiming it would be take care of on their end. There are several similar problems with this property on Trip Advisor.

We have stayed in the Alexandria and Crystal City areas and had easy commutes by the Metro. Check on Sidestep.com or Kayak.com for those areas.

And YES by all means avoid Spring Break in DC. It is miserably crowded!
