DSs (12) have started athletics. They go to work out at 6:30 am before school starts, so they are starving by lunch time. They can't eat a heavy breakfast because they don't want to be 'a spitter' out on the field. :lmao: I am trying to stay away from milk products and greasy food since the temp is in the 90's before workouts end.

Any suggestions?
TIA

How about cereal bars or granola bars? Also fresh fruit, bagels or english muffins.

I was going to suggest cereal-dry. Or breakfast bars that you can make at home. We use this one(by Alton Brown)

8 ounces old-fashioned rolled oats, approximately 2 cups
1 1/2 ounces raw sunflower seeds, approximately 1/2 cup
3 ounces sliced almonds, approximately 1 cup
1 1/2 ounces wheat germ, approximately 1/2 cup
6 ounces honey, approximately 1/2 cup
1 3/4 ounces dark brown sugar, approximately 1/4 cup packed
1-ounce unsalted butter, plus extra for pan
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
6 1/2 ounces chopped dried fruit, any combination of apricots, cherries or blueberries This I change up and add 1/2chocolate chips 1/2 chopped fruit so my kids will eat them. sometimes no fruit if I am out.

Directions
Butter a 9 by 9-inch glass baking dish and set aside. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.

Spread the oats, sunflower seeds, almonds, and wheat germ onto a half-sheet pan. Place in the oven and toast for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally.

In the meantime, combine the honey, brown sugar, butter, extract and salt in a medium saucepan and place over medium heat. Cook until the brown sugar has completely dissolved.

Once the oat mixture is done, remove it from the oven and reduce the heat to 300 degrees F. Immediately add the oat mixture to the liquid mixture, add the dried fruit, and stir to combine. Turn mixture out into the prepared baking dish and press down, evenly distributing the mixture in the dish and place in the oven to bake for 25 minutes. Remove from the oven and allow to cool completely. Cut into squares and store in an airtight container for up to a week.

Oh and we've done breakfast burritos = I recently saw how to make these ahead and freeze and then just nuke in the morning. I am going to try that this year. One of my kids likes the scrambled eggs, turkey sausage and cheese in a tortilla.

A hard boiled egg and some whole wheat toast? Or maybe a whole wheat english muffin with a fried egg and some cheese like a homemade healthier McMuffin. Bananas are nice and filling fruit. Sliced bananas on toast with peanut butter could give you some good carbs and protein.

I like to make breakfast burritos. You can make a bunch and freeze them. The nice thing is that you can make them with whatever your family likes. We like them with ham or sausage, egg and cheese. Just cook your ingredients, mix, and fill a tortilla. I wrap them in plastic wrap, then put them in a freezer bag. Heat them in the microwave and you are ready to go!

Something we like is what DD15 calls "Egg McMEM" , after me. A whole grain toasted English muffin with either shaved smoked turkey (or ham) and a wedge of Laughing Cow cheese smeared on one half. We often add a scrambled egg white or two. Low-fat, high protein, easily digested.

You can make 'muffins' with veggies and scrambled eggs. Spray your muffin pan with Pam, in a bowl mix various chopped veggies (broccoli, onions, peppers, whatever you like), some cheese and eggs with a bit of water, salt and pepper. Stir it up, pour it in the muffin pan and bake. They are good to grab and go.

:thumbsup2...these are always around at our house too. I add chopped green pepper to mine :)

This is exactly what I was looking for. This year my goal is to make and freeze everything I can. So with the breakfast burritos, the scrambles eggs will be fine when they are warmed in the mircowave? I thought they would be a little watery and runny.

Thanks again everyone for all the ideas. Keep 'em coming.

Do you ever put a little honey on top of the banana? Yum

bannana's and peenut butter. I have one for breakfast and I don't get the mid morning munchies.

My kids are swimmers so they practice 5-7am before school. They don't really eat before practice, so they are starving after!

I make breakfast burritos: usually ham or sausage, egg beaters, diced veggies and potatoes. Roll up and wrap individually in foil to freeze. I put them all in a zip-top bag in the freezer and they pull one out and unwrap/heat in the microwave.

This also works with canadian bacon/egg/cheese bagels or english muffins.

Oatmeal: I make a big batch on the weekend--real oats, cooked with apples and cinnamon. I use a little extra liquid, so it's slightly runny because when it's re-heated that liquid gets absorbed. (use apple juice, milk, water: whatever you like) Put in those small Ziploc containers and refrigerate or freeze til needed and heat up in the microwave.

My son love the Jimmy D's brand of turkey sausage on a stick, wrapped in a pancake. They're a little pricey and I've thought about trying to make those homemade.

This would be like a mini quiche, right? Have you tried to freeze them? This sounds wonderful.

Dinner the night before lots of good carb's, protein, veggie's and lots of milk.

Breakfast -Whole wheat/ whole grain peanut butter toast/muffins - banana or and apple before he leaves. Muffins with cream cheese. Make him eat right when he 1st get's up this will give his food a chance to settle before practice.

If you need to pack something for after practice - Protein bars, planter's nutrition bar's are good and tasty, granola or cereal bar's. Do they provide Gator-aid or power-aid during or after practice? You might want to send one or you could put the powder mixes for him to mix - himself. Dehydration is nothing to mess around with.

I was team mom from middle school thru graduations. Living in Florida during that time, It's get's hot really fast. I have had numerous kids pass out, "spitter's" and such.

peanut butter sandwich or a cheese sandwich (no mayo)

carb/protien,,,,,great combo to hold you over till lunch

Anybody seen The Replacments? Boiled eggs are not a good idea for breakfast before sports.:rotfl:

I would also send some sort of fruit.

Oh, another favorite: 2 Eggo multigrain waffles, spread with peanut butter and sliced banana between. Or you can do one side pb, one side Nutella. mmmm! Whole grain, protein, and potassium:thumbsup2

Maybe a protein shake made with soy milk, banana, peanut butter and some flax thrown in there. My DS loves these and they carry him pretty far before he is hungry again. A protein bar also would work, as is packable/portable.

Nuts with some fruit would be good, or trail mix of some kind.

You dont say what kind of athletics-my kids were runners and ball players and we ran cross country in the fall. They ran several miles a day and eating anything terribly filling before a long run is a no go so we usually went for fresh fruit and whole grain toast before they left the house and then something portable they could eat on the way to class-granola bars, burritos, peanut butter sandwiches ( it does pay to to note if your child has acne problems that my now 22 year old sons dermitologist has told him to stop eating peanut butter and limit his dairy intake to help his skin issues), whole grain english muffins with ham and cheese, pretty much anything they could put in a back pack or once they started driving, a small cooler.
Limit soda and sports drinks and make sure they drink lots of water-dehydration is nothing to mess with but with sports drinks they can get too much of a good thing before they really quench thrist.
