I just moved from a 4 year old house to a 96-year old house! I was pleased to see that this house boasted "newer windows", but not so pleased to realize that "newer" certainly didn't mean "new".

There are replacement windows throughout the house, but not every window has a storm to slide down for the cold weather months. What can I do to keep the drafts out?!?!

Also, my DD10's window is "slipping" from the top. I don't know how else to describe it. It won't stay up, and there's a gap of about 1/4".

I don't even know WHO to call to fix this sort of thing??? (I'm newly single, so the Handy Husband solution is definitely out)

I'm panicking, because it's getting down into the 30s at night now, and I can just see my money flying out the windows -- literally!!

Have you tried using the plastic sheeting to seal your windows? It's super easy and really does work. If you want to take it one more step further, you could get insulating drapes to go over the windows.

We cover our windows every year with plastic. There are kits that give you the plastic plus a thin double sided tape. We line the entire frame of the window with a strip of the tape, then put the plastic up. Cut around the window opening on the plastic, then hit it with a hair dryer to shrink the plastic tight. You can barely tell the plastic is there.

Obviously, if you catch a nice surprise of a 70 degree day in the midst of winter (not too long ago I was wearing shorts on New Years and folks were out on their bikes everywhere,) you won't be able to open the window without taking the plastic down.

I also say plastic up the windows. I did that for a couple winters on my second floor until I could replace the windows. One window was so bad that when I went to slide the bottom part up it fell out in my hands! The plastic made a huge difference. You can pick up the kits at Walmart, Target, Kmart, Loews and the Depot.

Got to love old houses...

to fix this go to hardware store buy dowl rods, round skinny wood, have them cut it so that it fits in window when all the way closed get two to prop up window then seal all the windows with plastic wrap kits works awsome.
