Hello!!

We will be heading to DC in a few days and are having a difficult time finding restaurants!!! Does anyone have any recommendations for family friendly restaurants that are close to the most popular sights?? We will be visiting the White House, Capital, Smithsonians, Fords Theatre, National Archives, Bureau of Engraving and Printing, Library of Congress, Lincoln Memorial, Washington Monument, Vietnam Wall, Korean Memorial, Kennedy Center, and Arlington Cemetery. Anything close to these places would be great!!!!

I would really appreciate any help!!!!!

THANKS!!!!
Angela

There are food courts in all of the Smithsonians. The cafeteria at the library of congress is a great place to eat-lots of choices and pretty reasonable. There isn't much down around the monuments.

there is a burger place an easy walk from the capitol that is really yummy called, "good stuff eatery." really good shakes, I rarely ever get one but couldn't resist. we all liked the burgers and fries.

The Regan Bldg and the Old Post Office both have nice food courts and the buildings themselves are interesting. The food at the Regan is better IMO.

The restaurants at the Smithsonian sculpture garden is nice too. For the museums, the restaurants at the American Indian Museum and at the National Gallery are the best of the group.

However, if you are coming to DC in a few days you will be here during the Folk Life Festival! There will be foods stands serving dishes from the countries represented. Pricey, but we have really enjoyed these in the past and the festival itself is not to be missed. Just be warned that it is HOT here. Have lots of water on you.

For sit-downs walk to Gallery Place/Chinatown, which isn't far off of the Mall or closer, try Cafe Atlantico or Jaleo.

Enjoy!

When we were there it was easy to find a street vendor or just some guy with a cooler and ice selling water for $1.

As far as sit-down restaurants go, my family really likes the Old Ebbitt Grill (http://www.ebbitt.com). I've been going there since I was much younger and always remember it being very family-friendly, if you're looking for a nicer meal. I'd suggest making a reservation before you go though.

We also really like the Old Post Office Pavilion for a light lunch as well--it's pretty much a regular food court, but the building is really nice and there's a nice elevator you can take to the top of the building's tower, giving you a really nice view of the city.

Nando's! :thumbsup2

Delicous food, and you specify how spicy you like it when you order, so if you - or the kids- like flavor without the kick, it's no problem. You can even get it totally plain. (but you can definitely get the kick!)

It's very close to the main sights in Washington, and it's almost a cross between counter service and sit down. You order at the counter, but it's not fast food. (it is fast, but healthy)

If you like the Hard Rock Cafe, there's one right next door to Ford's Theater. :)

ditto on Hard Rock.

If you get over to Georgetown Olde Europe is wonderful...

Near Ford's Theatre there's a corner place called Harry's. Good portions, kid friendly and they give you an Oreo with each platter. And popcorn on the table! Good luck!

This looks great! Thanks for sharing! We will be in DC in a couple of weeks and still look for some new things to try. We usually don't have a hard time with sit down dinner type places, but definatley lunch, inexpensive good grab and go is challenging. Still looking if anyone has suggestions.

Some of what we've done on our last trip: Old Ebbitt Grill (our favorite), Clyde's in Chinatown, Legal Seafood, M&S, McCormick & Schmick's, Hard Rock Cafe, The Occidental Grille, Cafe du Parc, Gordon Biersch, Billy Martin's in Georgetown, the cafeteria at the Capitol (kids loved this), Cosi, Five Guys, and Sabrett hot dogs.

I just ran across this looking for restaurants online. It is Chef Spike Mendelsohn's restaurant (Top Chef), and was so bummed to see on the menu the burgers may contain traces of nuts (DD is allergic). Sounds great! may do a milkshake w/o DD. (shhh)

We just ate at Old Ebbitt Grill a few weeks ago and had a wonderful meal (again). DH made ressies before hand on open table.com. Like others have said, takes lots of water. It was extremely hot and humid (and I even like hot and humid, but this was pretty uncomfortable).

We ate at a restaurant at the train station (which is fun to see, because it is so pretty!) and it was called "America" I think. It had food from all the different regions of the US and it had the traditional turkey dinner with all the fixings (which I had and it was really good). We liked it, and it was a fun place to sit and watch the people coming and going at the station while you eat. And they had lots of pie options which I liked. This was an actual sit-down restaurant and not just some sort of stand or food court.
